This year’s display at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre represented an RAF small arms range in the UK circa 1941. Over the 2 days we demonstrated range drills with blank rounds (although we were asked several times if we were using real rounds!). A massive thanks to the Centre organisers for allowing us to do the display again, we had lots of visitor interest throughout the weekend.

Bumping this past post up, since it’s the 85th anniversary this year. Watch this space on how we’ve decided to help commemorate it 👀🫡

On this day in 1941 a N**i backed Iraqi rebellion tried to oust the British from Iraq and started a siege of RAF Habbaniya. Habbaniya was little more than a flying training base with a large civilian population. The only ground fighting forces were 400 men of The King's Own Royal Rifles and Number 1 Armoured Car Company RAF (now 1 Squadron RAF Regiment).

They found themselves surrounded by 9,000 rebels with tanks and artillery. The aircrew in ancient aircraft, infantry and Rolls Royce Armoured Cars acquitted themselves admirably over weeks of siege and, reinforced by Number II Armoured Car Company, defeated the attack.

The Armoured Car Companies gave hot pursuit- hounding the rebels through Fallujah and into Baghdad before their surrender.

By regaining control of Iraq, a supply of oil was guaranteed for the beleaguered British forces in North Africa and, crucially, was denied to the Afrika Corps. This was crucial to Allied success in the Mediterranean and foiled Hitler's ambitions to seize Suez and invade British India.

Last weekend we had the privilege of providing a display at RAF College Cranwell for the Cranwellians Association.

The theme of the display was the 85th anniversary of the Battle of France, but with a focus on the RAF withdrawal from the southern sector through ports such as St Nazaire. The 51st Highland Division provided support, particularly guarding RAF airfields and landing grounds.

Sadly many evacuated RAF personnel were lost in the sinking of HMT Lancashire, something suppressed by the British government at the time.
