The Norris Museum

The Norris Museum The Norris Museum is the museum of Huntingdonshire. It tells the story of this historic county through time.

It tells the story of this historic county through the ages. Founded in 1931 under the will of local amateur historian Herbert Norris. He had spent his lifetime collecting books manuscripts and objects relating to the history of Huntingdonshire. When he died he left his collections to the town of St Ives where he was born together with almost his whole estate to pay for the Norris Museum to be bui

lt. The Museum still stands in its original building set in a picturesque riverside garden. As its founder intended, the Norris Museum collects and displays the history of Huntingdonshire from earliest times to the present day. The collections range from the fossilised bones of the giant reptiles that lived here in the time of the dinosaurs 160 million years ago through remains from the Stone Age and the Roman period up to more recent history such as the local craft of lace making and the local sport of ice skating in the nearby Fens. An art gallery displays local paintings and is also used for special exhibitions.

🏛️ One month to go!

In just four weeks, Bob Burn-Murdoch returns to St Ives for the first public talk he's given in over a decade. And he's chosen to share the stories – and mysteries – of our medieval bridge and chapel.

If you've been thinking about booking, now's the time. Seats are limited, and we're expecting this to sell out.

🕰️ Reminiscing at the Museum 🕰️

Everyone reminisces. Whether it's sharing childhood stories with friends, recalling family traditions around the dinner table, or remembering special moments from years gone by, reminiscing is all about happy memories and treasured experiences.

For older people, these memories can be especially meaningful and valuable. Over the last few years, our reminiscence work at the museum has involved visiting care homes, day centres, and social clubs, using objects and photographs from the past to spark long-term memories, encourage conversation, and empower people to tell their own stories.

We hold regular reminiscence sessions at the museum on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, from 10.30am–11.30am.

☕ Cost: £2.50 per person
🍪 Refreshments will be available

If you would like to join a reminiscence session, please contact Susan, Communities Officer, on 01480 497314 or email [email protected].

We look forward to welcoming you and hearing your stories.

This week (1-7 June) is National Volunteers’ Week when we recognize and thank our volunteers for the huge contribution they make to what we do here at the Museum. We have an amazing team of volunteers who look after the garden (come rain or shine!), catalogue our collections, have responsibility for the shop, open Bridge Chapel at weekends, help with school visits and family activities; run our successful Art Club, Men’s Group, Reminiscence Sessions and Creative Café and give talks. We rely on their knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm for what they do and they are great company to work with! A big thank you to you all ❤️
We are always looking for more wonderful volunteers to join our friendly team and a list of roles is on our website. If you would like to join us please complete and return our Volunteer application form https://www.norrismuseum.org.uk/.../volunteer.../

On Thursday we had a lovely day with a group of young people taking part in Arts Award Discover in a Day!

Throughout the day they learnt about different artists, created their own drawings, designed beautiful mosaic coasters, and got hands-on with clay to make their own sculptures and pots. It was wonderful to see their creativity, imagination, and confidence shine through in every activity.

A fantastic day full of art, learning, and creativity.
