HUGE thanks to the fantastic team of volunteers from AtkinsRéalis who joined us again on the 20th May!

The group, from the Central Rail Systems Alliance, kindly used one of their two annual volunteer days to come and get their hands dirty with some essential track maintenance at Amerton Railway, for the second year in a row now.

What makes their contribution even more special is the team's background. We had a brilliant mix of track, civil engineering, and overhead line design engineers, as well as project managers based in Crewe, Manchester, and Derby. As they told us themselves, none of them install track or work on the tools for a living, so they swapped their usual roles designing railways and I infrastructure to get hands-on with the physical work – a fantastic effort!

For a volunteer-run charity like ours, this kind of expert and enthusiastic support is invaluable. The team's hard work has made a real, tangible difference, and we're so grateful for their time and effort.

It’s brilliant that AtkinsRéalis gives its staff two volunteer days a year to support causes like ours. The team’s hard work and enthusiasm were incredible, and their support is hugely appreciated by everyone here at our volunteer-operated charity.

Thanks for all your help. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did, and look forward to welcoming you back!

Did you see Amerton Railway on BBC One's Bargain Hunt on Monday? In case you're missing the railway while we're closed for winter maintenance, look out for the repeats or catch up on BBC iPlayer!

It featured a very interesting interview about the British Railways "Stinks", the last team of Chemists that worked for BR, trying to optimise everything from rail adhesion to oil changes in locomotives with Dave Smith, one of the last chemists and author of the book "British Railways Stinks". An interview which took place in our engine sheds!

Don't forget we'll be open again for the 2026 season on Wednesday 1st April!

Santa had a lovely time seeing everyone and looks forward to seeing everyone again next year! However after all his deliveries he definitely deserves a well earned rest!

A fantastic set of pictures that show in more recent times the “Old” Cliffe Hiil Quarry in the foreground in which “Isabel” (and “Peter” now at Amberley Museum)(and various other Bagnall locos) worked. The old quarry tip on which the locos were stored when taken out of use in the mid 1940s and from where Isabel and Peter were saved would have been just to the left of centre in the first picture (the tip was moved to expand the working area in the early 1980's). The route of the narrow gauge Cliffe Hill Mineral Railway that connected the quarry to the mainline siding curved away to the top right of the photos. No narrow gauge in the quarries today ! - rock excavated from Old Cliffe Hill is taken to New Cliffe Hill for processing by conveyor through a deep tunnel.
