https://argylls.co.uk/social-media-guideline/ The Museum tells the history of the Regiment from its early formation as the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders and 93rd Sutherland Highlanders to the present day. The Regiment has served in all the major conflicts from the Napoleonic and C

rimea wars, where it earned the name Thin Red Line at the battle of Balaclava, and subsequent Indian Mutiny. At the turn of the century it was involved in the Boer wars and served with distinction in both World Wars. In the last half of the 20th century the regiment found itself in Korea, Crater and Northern Ireland. The 21st century has seen the jocks continue to serve as the world's policeman in the middle east, Iraq and Afganistan.

A huge congratulations and sincere thank you to Liz Gillespie on the successful launch of her book Battlefields, which took place on Saturday.

Battlefields is a powerful collection of poetry exploring themes of remembrance, alongside support and wellbeing for those who have served in the Armed Forces, as well as those currently serving today.

It was also wonderful to welcome Scott Ashworth from Who Dares Cares, who spoke about the important work and mission of their organisation.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success, and a special thank you to Carter Brown (pictured) for his moving rendition of Amazing Grace.

We are also incredibly grateful that a portion of the proceeds from book sales was generously donated to the museum. Your support is greatly appreciated.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. And the photographs in our collection could tell even more stories. Our archives span over several decades, and so, this month Roisin takes a look at the evolution of wedding dresses through the ages, portrayed through Argyll ceremonies: https://argylls.co.uk/something-old-something-new-dresses-from-our-collections/

Last week, Brigadier (Retd) Adam Griffiths, who served in the Argylls and is Regimental Trust Chairman and former CO 5 SCOTS, was accompanied by members of 4 SCOTS and former Argyll Colour Sergeant (Mor 2IC) Shaun Dick, and Pipe Sergeant Alistair Park for the rededication and reburial of Corporal Gilbert Nay Hamilton.

Corporal Nay Hamilton served with the 7th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was killed in action during the Battle for Gerbini in July 1943. After a quick burial all details of his were lost. In March 1944 the remains of an unidentified Corporal of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders were exhumed from a field grave near Gerbini and moved to the Catania War Cemetery. A named identification proved impossible and so the man was buried as an unknown corporal.

After years of extensive research, Corporal Nay Hamilton was identified and given his proper burial service. You can read this article by the Commonwealth War Graves which explains their research, process and tells us Corporal Nay Hamilton's story: https://www.cwgc.org/our-work/news/unknown-second-world-war-lanarkshire-soldier-named-following-new-research/

With Glasgow Museum's Barbie™ exhibition nearing, we had a look into our collection. And whilst we don't have any Barbie's, we do have a figurine that many may recognise.
Released in 1970, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlander's Action Man was incredibly popular across the UK and is a collectors piece today.

But why were the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders picked, and how did the producers manage to get the intricate details of the badges on such a small scale?
Have a read at our latest blog here: https://argylls.co.uk/when-action-man-joined-the-argylls/

Next weekend (both Saturday and Sunday) Stirling Castle will be hosting their annual Unicorn Day events.
Whilst the museum won’t be playing a big part on the day, this will impact car parking facilities for anyone planning to visit the museum. Due to the volume of people anticipated for the day, the car park will be closed on the esplanade.
Please make alternative travel or parking arrangements. Blue badge holders will still be able to park on the esplanade if you make yourselves known to staff on approach.
