MY HAT AND MY OTHER HAT

It's the final week of My Hat and My Other Hat, an installation by Utrecht-based artist 🎩

My Hat and My Other Hat forms part of PINK’s international residency series, inviting artists to develop site-responsive work through engagement with Stockport’s materials, histories, and cultural landscape.

Developed through a two-part residency at PINK, Egelie approached Stockport’s history of hat making as a structure through which questions of identity, performance, and authorship are rehearsed.

The installation transformed the gallery into a medieval-inspired tavern, whilst evoking a costume rental shop, storage room, or theatrical stage. Here, the boundaries between industrial production and craft, performer and spectator, self and character remain unsettled. Underlying it all is the hat’s oldest social function: its power to conceal as much as it signals, allowing a person to arrive somewhere unread, or to arrive as someone else entirely.

On 13 April we launched this project with a constellation of bespoke actions designed to activate the installation. A huge thank you to for capturing these so beautifully.

KNIP. Six weeks. Six young people. One big question: what does PINK look like through fresh eyes?

Our pilot work/learn programme for 18–24s (supported by the UK Government via Stockport Council) brought together voices from the visual arts and beyond to get inside the organisation, ask difficult questions, and help us think differently.

It feels like a lifetime ago now. But the work didn't stop when the programme ended.

We've been working behind the scenes to shape the cohort's findings into something lasting — a glossary and publication that documents their thinking, their language, and their vision for what youth engagement in the arts can genuinely look like.

It's coming soon. Stay tuned.

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEK

'A Saturday Afternoon with…'
Saturday 21 March2–4pm
FREEOpen to all

Join Caz Egelie and Dr Benjamin Wild in conversation at PINK as part of A Saturday Afternoon with…, our informal talks series created to open up dialogue around our exhibitions. These relaxed gatherings offer a chance to hear directly from artists, gain insight into their process, and discuss the ideas shaping their work.

During the afternoon, Caz will speak about the development of My Hat and My Other Hat, reflecting on how the project evolved through their residency at PINK and their research into Stockport’s hatting history. They will discuss how the exhibition draws on costume, performance, and craft traditions to explore questions of identity, authorship, and self-presentation.

Caz will also share how the installation took shape physically, transforming the gallery into a medieval-inspired tavern that sits somewhere between theatre set, costume archive, and social gathering space. The talk will look at how these structures invite visitors to shift between roles — performer, spectator, maker, and character.

My Hat and My Other Hat is a site-specific installation by Utrecht-based artist Caz Egelie that takes Stockport’s hatting history as both material and metaphor. Developed through a two-part residency at PINK, the exhibition approaches hatmaking as a framework for thinking through identity, performance, and disguise. Underlying it all is the hat’s oldest social function: its power to conceal as much as it signals, allowing someone to arrive somewhere unread, or as someone else entirely.

The project forms part of PINK’s international residency series, inviting artists to create site-responsive works that engage with Stockport’s evolving cultural and urban landscape.

My Hat and My Other Hat is supported using funding from the UK Government, the Haworth Trust, and the Mondriaan Fund.

AFTER HOURS
20 March
9pm - 1am
18+

This Friday as part of 1.2, we are bringing you a very special After Hours event, transforming our brand new exhibition My Hat and My Other Hat by artist Caz Egelie into a late-night performance space for one night only.

For this one-off late-night takeover, the gallery shifts from exhibition space to intimate music venue, with live sets from EYVE, whose atmospheric, shape-shifting sound blends experimental electronics with live instrumentation, and Dr Mystery, delivering hypnotic, otherworldly compositions that move between ambient textures and driving rhythm.

We will also have DJ sets from Menu Menu, known for playful, left-field selections that traverse genres and tempos, and Atalaya, whose sets fuse deep club rhythms with global and experimental influences. Together they bring a late-night energy that blurs the line between gallery and dancefloor, turning our latest exhibition into a living, breathing performance environment.

Entry is free but we encourage early attendance as capacity is limited. So whether you’re looking for somewhere for a dance after at St. Mary’s Church or you’re looking to swing between and to cram in as many acts as possible - we can be guarantee this evening is not to be missed!
