Joing us at War Wheels 2026 is North Staffs Military Vehicle Trust area secretary Simon Henson's Ford GPW!

This Jeep represents one operated by the USAAF 8th Air Force, 453
Bomb Group, which was based at RAF Old Buckenham airfield in
Norfolk. 453 Bomb group had four squadrons consisting of the
732nd, 733rd, 734th and 735th Bombardment squadrons.
The unit operated the Consolidated B 24 Liberator bombers.
Notable personnel included actors Major Jimmy Stewart, the Group
Operations Officer, who flew at least 24 combat missions and
Radioman/Air gunner, Staff Sergeant Walter Matthau.

This particular Jeep was built in February 1945 by the Ford Motor
company, under licence to Willys Overland and it has many parts
stamped with the Ford F symbol.

Shipped to Europe too late to see active service, this jeep was
gifted to the French Army, as was a considerable amount of US
equipment. Use by the French Army is not known; however, it was
rebuilt at some time as it has a Hodgkiss body tub, French wheels
and French glass in the windscreen.

On display on the North Staffs Military Vehicle Group will be this example of the Daimler Ferret, owned by Ian Waite.

The Daimler Ferret was a British armoured reconnaissance vehicle introduced in the early 1950s, designed to replace wartime scout cars such as the Daimler Dingo. Built by the Daimler Company, it featured a compact 4x4 layout and a fully enclosed armoured hull, offering improved protection for its crew. Thousands were produced, and the Ferret became a standard reconnaissance vehicle for the British Army and many other nations during the Cold War.

Powered by a Rolls-Royce B60 petrol engine, the Ferret was known for its excellent mobility, capable of reaching speeds of around 50 mph (80 km/h) on roads. Its small size and agile handling made it ideal for scouting, liaison, and patrol duties, particularly in urban or confined environments. Various versions were produced, including turreted models armed with machine guns, as well as variants equipped for communications and command roles.

The Ferret saw widespread service around the world, including in conflicts and peacekeeping operations from the 1950s through to the late 20th century. It was used by British forces in places such as Northern Ireland, as well as by numerous export customers across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Even today, many Ferrets survive in private collections and military museums, valued for their durability, distinctive design, and long service history.

Whilst our show has a wide array of WW2 vehicles, we're very keen to bring more post war vehicles to War Wheels in the future. Please do get in touch if you own post war vehicles and would like to display at our event.

Joining us at War Wheels 2026 is this BSA M20, owned by Paul Brindley.

The BSA M20 was one of the most widely used British military motorcycles of the Second World War, produced by the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA). Introduced in 1937 and built in large numbers throughout the war, over 120,000 units were made, making it the most numerous motorcycle in British Army service. Its simple and robust design made it ideal for the demanding conditions of wartime use.

Powered by a 500cc single-cylinder side-valve engine, the M20 prioritised reliability and low maintenance over speed or performance. It featured a heavy, sturdy frame and was capable of handling rough terrain, carrying equipment, and enduring long periods of use with minimal servicing. The bike became synonymous with dispatch riders, who relied on it for delivering messages, es**rt duties, and general communication roles.

The BSA M20 served in virtually every theatre where British and Commonwealth forces operated, from Europe to North Africa and Asia. After the war, many were sold as surplus and converted for civilian use, contributing to their survival in large numbers today. The M20 remains a popular classic motorcycle, appreciated for its rugged character and its important role in military history.

Joining us at War Wheels 2026 is this 1941 Willys MB, owned by Paul & Rob Brindley.

This vehicle represents a Jeep of the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance
Squadron. British Airborne Jeeps featured several modifications to
reduce weight and shorten the overall length of the vehicle to
enable transportation by the Mk I Horsa Glider.

The modifications included the cutting down of the front bumper,
removal of the spare wheel mount, Jerry can holder and bumpers
from the rear of the vehicle, all grab handles removed, a centre
boss added to allow for easy removal / refitment of the steering
wheel and the relocation of the spare wheel to the front bumper.
The Reconnaissance Squadron further modified their Jeeps with the
fitment of the Vickers K machine gun which necessitated the
removed of the front screen.

The airborne divisional sign and the Reconnaissance Squadron flash
appears on both the front and rear of the Jeep. Additionally, in the
centre of the spare wheel, is an olive drab plate bearing a white
circle enclosing the number 29. This identifies the Jeep as being
assigned to ‘C’ Troop.

Following yesterday's announcement of our first confirmed vehicle for War Wheels 2026, Here's some fun facts about the M16 Half-track:

===

The M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage (MGMC) was a U.S. Army self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle used in WWII and beyond. Although designed

===

It was based on the M3 half-track

===

The Four .50 calibre Browning M2 machine guns are capable of firing over 2,000 rounds per minute combined

===

German troops nicknamed similar quad-.50 setups “The Meat Chopper” because of their devastating effect on infantry.

===

Typical crew: 5 men

===

The turret was completely open-topped, which gave excellent visibility—but very little protection.

Four .50 calibre machine guns firing continuously is quite loud - crews often went partially deaf!

===

The guns are capable to elevating from roughly -10° to + 90°

===

Each ammunition box, or tombstone, contains 200 rounds of ammunition.

The first vehicle confirmed to attend War Wheels 2026 is the M16 Halftrack, owned by John Keeling of the North Staffs Military Vehicle Group!

This M16 was recently on display at the NEC Classic Motor Show in November and certainly drew a lot of attention. Weighing in at over 10 tons fully loaded, the M16 is equipped with quad mounted Browning M2 .50 Calibre machine guns on a Maxson M45 turret which allows full 360° rotation.

The M16, nicknamed the 'Meat Chopper', entered service in 1943 and was eventually retired from U.S Army service in 1958 following the Korean War. Initially, the M16 was used in an anti-aircraft role, but it could also be used as infantry support.

At 3 Miles Per Gallon, this vehicle is unlikely to meet Mr Miliband's 'Net Zero' target!
