Catterline’s enduring connections
Since opening our gallery here in Stonehaven, we’ve encountered the legacy of Joan Eardley and the remarkable village of Catterline in some many and varied ways.
Over the years, we’ve had paintings by Eardley, Annette Stephen and Lil Neilson pass through our hands, met people who knew these artists, and encountered others with family connections to them and to Catterline.
These encounters resonate deeply with us. They remind us that the story of a place doesn’t end with the passing of its most celebrated residents. It lives on through the people who remember, the families who remain connected, the artists who continue to be inspired, and those who discover its history for the first time.
More than 60 years after Joan Eardley’s passing, her connection with Catterline remains remarkably strong. And through artists such as Stuart Buchanan, that relationship between place, people and painting continues.
It makes us wonder just how many people, here in the north-east and much further afield, have a direct or indirect connection to this extraordinary village.
