📢 Heritage Careers Week 2026 is Coming! 🏛️⚒️🌊

During the week beginning 5th October, DYW Outer Hebrides will be celebrating Heritage Careers Week with a range of activities taking place across all four secondary schools in the Western Isles.

The week aims to shine a spotlight on the wide variety of careers available within the historic environment sector, helping young people discover the diverse opportunities that exist in preserving, protecting and sharing our rich heritage.

Throughout the week, we’ll also be sharing a series of career profiles from people working in the industry, giving pupils an insight into their roles, career journeys and the skills they use every day.

**We are happy to announce that the new exhibition in Museum nan Eilean, Benbecula is now open **

The exhibition celebrates the generations of people who have worked on the lifeline ferry services – on the ships, at the harbours and the pier offices.

This year marks 175 years since the foundations of Caledonian MacBrayne were laid. They are a part of west coast history, important employers both on ships and in ports, and a lifeline service for transporting vital goods, services and livestock, as well as passengers and cars.

Based on the personal collection of John Macdonald, a Port Assistant at Lochmaddy, and developed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Heritage Team, from the original concept by Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath / Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre. The exhibition, through photographs, objects, model ships and personal stories, reflects the vital role ferries have played in sustaining island life—supporting communities, economies, and cultural connections over nearly two centuries.

Hey everyone, we're encouraging our visitors to today! For this inaugural Dolly Day, we've selected Action For Children, which is doing so much good work for children and families here in the Outer Hebrides, as our suggested charity. We're sure Dolly would approve!

Talking of great women, don't forget to drop in and visit our new exhibition, Following the Fish, which tells the unsung stories of our own remarkable women who worked so hard to support themselves and their families. They definitely worked much more than 9 to 5!!!

New exhibition now open in Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean, Stornoway.

It explores the unsung stories of the herring girls who between 1850 and 1950 travelled hundreds of miles across the UK following the herring fishing fleets.

This was a joint partnership project between Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean, High Life Highland and the Highland Archive Centre, Suffolk Archives, and the Norfolk Record Office to capture stories from across the country.
