Our new exhibition; 'When the Sea Meets the Road' is now open!

Thanks to everyone who attended our preview event, especially John Macdonald whose private collection forms the basis of the exhibition.

Through photographs, objects, model ships and personal stories, the exhibition reflects the vital role ferries have played in sustaining island life from across the Outer and Inner Hebrides. It is a celebration of the generations of people who have worked on these lifeline ferry services โ€“ on the ships, at the harbours and the pier offices.

Thanks also to David Ashmead - Brand Design Lead with CalMac Ferries Ltd - who designed our interpretation panels, and to Stuart at Graphite Signs Stornoway for printing and installing them. David was able to join us at the preview event along with Peter Griffiths - Head of Brand Marketing at CalMac Ferries Ltd. Thanks to both of them for their support in the run up to the exhibition opening.

The exhibition will run at Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean, Stornoway until 8th August and then will move to our museum in Benbecula on 22 August.

The exhibition 'When the Sea Meets the Road' celebrates the generations of people who have worked on these lifeline ferry services โ€“ on the ships, at the harbours and the pier offices.

Based on the personal collection of John Macdonald, a Port Assistant at Lochmaddy, and developed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar โ€™s Heritage Team, from the original concept by Comann Eachdraidh Uibhist a Tuath and Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre and with thanks to support from Ferries teams. The exhibition, through photographs, objects, model ships and personal stories, reflects the vital role ferries have played in sustaining island life from across the Outer and Inner Hebrides.

Only one week left to see the beautiful and intriguing Scottish Diaspora Tapestry as it closes in Museum nan Eilean, Benbecula on Saturday 23 May.

Forty panels including this one which is called the 'Ancient Links' and represents Ireland. The connection between the Scots and the Irish date back to days beyond record. To the ancient peoples of Ireland and Scotland, the Irish Sea was a highway rather than a barrier. The Scotti arrived in Scotland from northeastern Ireland in 400 to 1000AD. For many centuries there was free movement of trade and people from one side to the other.

It was not just material goods that crossed the sea. Families lived across both Irish and Scottish shores, taking their loyalties and rivalries with them, as well as their faith. The ties of Gaelic culture, blood, and language between Ireland and western Scotland remain strong today.
