Isn't this a glorious celebration of colour! Colin Brown’s Yuta is full of wonderful contrasts, from the exquisite detail of the traditional Japanese costume to the bold, almost playful marks of paint surrounding the figure.

I particularly love the way Colin has handled the kimono. The intricate gold patterning, little pink flowers and beautiful folds of turquoise and blue are quite captivating. And then your eye wanders to the background, where vivid pinks, splashes of cobalt blue and scattered golden dots create a completely different energy.

The figure herself is rather intriguing. She appears so composed amidst all that colour and movement, holding her delicate branch of blue blossom. I find myself wondering where she is looking and what has caught her attention.

This is what I enjoy about Colin’s work. He has such a distinctive way of combining the elegance of traditional Japanese imagery with the freedom and spontaneity of contemporary painting.

What a wonderful face Rosalind Lyons has painted here. So composed, so direct, and with just the slightest suggestion of a smile. I wonder what she is thinking?

In The Pattern of Mine Own Thoughts, Rosalind has taken all the splendour of Tudor portraiture and made it distinctly her own. Look closely at the extraordinary headdress, the tiny pearls, the beautifully worked jewellery and the elaborate embroidery of her gown. Even the background deserves a closer look, with its little birds, flowers, stars, a sailing ship and a rather splendid sun peeping out from the patterned squares.

I love how the simplicity of her expression sits against all this wonderful decoration. Nothing feels excessive, despite the abundance of detail.

And wouldn’t she look marvellous in a dark, richly furnished dining room? Those soft terracotta and muted gold tones, particularly against the dramatic black of her headdress, would be beautiful in such a setting.

A little rediscovery from the Fosse collection, this wonderful coastal painting by artist Fleur Grabow.

One of the unexpected pleasures of settling into my new home office has been reorganising paintings from previous Fosse exhibitions that are still available. It’s proving to be quite a slow process, mainly because I keep stopping when something catches my eye!

This week it was this gem.

I’d forgotten quite how uplifting it is, the sweep of coastline disappearing into the distance, those wonderfully loose wildflowers in the foreground and all that glorious colour. On a rather autumnal day, it brought a very welcome bit of summer into the office.

There’s something rather lovely about revisiting paintings from past exhibitions in this way. You see them with fresh eyes, and occasionally wonder why on earth they’re still available.

This Fleur Grabow is one of those.

There’s so much to enjoy in Lucy Pratt’s High Street Rhythm, the wonderfully observed characters, dogs weaving between legs, a flash of red from the telephone box, and that lovely sense of everyone being caught mid-stride.

Lucy has such an instinct for the theatre of everyday life. Nothing feels posed; instead, the painting has the bustle and slightly chaotic charm of a high street on a bright day, with little moments revealing themselves the longer you look.

Currently on view as part of Figuratively Speaking, which opened online with Fosse Gallery last week.

A little change of scene at Fosse Gallery…

After a rather busy few months behind the scenes, I’m very excited to say that I’m now settling into my new, bespoke home office, a beautiful new space from which to work with our artists, collectors and all things Fosse.

It feels like the beginning of a fresh chapter. The paintings have made their way onto the walls, the desk is filling up, and I’m gradually finding a home for everything… although I suspect the latter may take a little longer!

You might also start to notice a change of scenery here. With a new space comes a new backdrop for photographing paintings, sharing new arrivals and giving you more glimpses behind the scenes, so things may look a little different on your screens from now on.

After more than 45 years of Fosse Gallery, it’s rather lovely to be moving forward while continuing to celebrate everything that makes the gallery what it is.

I’m so excited for what comes next.

A first look at ‘Figuratively Speaking’, launching online this Wednesday, 30 September. ✨

Celebrating the enduring wonder of figurative and narrative painting, our new mixed exhibition brings together 14 artists, each with their own distinctive approach to the figure, storytelling and the imagined world.

It is a subject particularly close to my heart, and one that Fosse Gallery has championed for more than 45 years, so I’m especially excited to finally begin sharing this collection with you.

From the quiet and mysterious to the playful, intimate and theatrical, Figuratively Speaking is filled with paintings that invite you to pause, look a little longer and wonder about the stories unfolding within them.

Swipe for a first glimpse of works by Rosalind Lyons, Mick Rooney RA, Colin Brown, Denise Liebermann and Jenny Holm. These are just a handful of the works waiting to be discovered when the full exhibition launches online on Wednesday.

FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING | Opening 30 September

Our next exhibition, Figuratively Speaking, opens this Wednesday, bringing together a remarkable collection of artists in celebration of the wonder, imagination and enduring power of figurative and narrative painting.

It is a subject especially close to our hearts, and one that the Fosse Gallery has championed for more than 45 years.

This exhibition also carries particular poignancy for us. Figuratively Speaking is a valedictory exhibition for the late Mick Rooney RA, a much-loved artist and longstanding friend of the gallery. It is the final mixed exhibition to which Mick contributed creative input, making this show a very special farewell and celebration of his extraordinary artistic legacy.

Featuring work by:

Mick Rooney RA · Lisa Wright · Peter Messer · Lucy Pratt · Charles Williams PPRWS, NEAC · Rosalind Lyons · Colin Brown · Bridget Lansley · George Underwood · Nadia Ryyzakova · Mick Kirkbride NEAC · Jenny Holm · Mike Jones · Denise Liebermann

We very much look forward to sharing this with you.

I’d happily have this little Carpanini tucked into a corner like this at home.

It’s only 7 × 4.5 inches, and I think that’s part of its charm. You don’t need to rearrange a room around it. It can sit above a favourite table, amongst books and flowers, and become one of those things you notice as you go about your day.

Hopscotch 1968 is currently included in A Life in the Day Of, our exhibition of work by David Carpanini. Painted in 1968, it’s a tiny glimpse of an everyday scene, children playing outside, which feels particularly suited to being lived with in this way.

A little reintroduction, as quite a few of you have discovered Fosse recently.

I’m Sharon, and my work with Fosse sits on both sides of collecting: working closely with the artists I represent, and helping their work find its way into collections and homes around the world.

I work closely with a carefully selected group of artists, building relationships that allow me to really understand their work, follow their practice as it develops and represent each artist with the attention they deserve.

The same applies to the collectors I work with. Sometimes I’m asked to find one particular painting; sometimes a conversation develops into a collection built gradually over many years. There is no prescribed way to collect, and that is very much part of the pleasure of it.

Fosse is fully online, but my approach remains very personal. If you’re considering a work, looking for something particular, or simply beginning to work out what you respond to, you’ll always be speaking directly with me.

For those who have been here for a while, thank you. And to everyone who has joined us recently, welcome.

What a cast of characters Carpanini has assembled here. Not one of them feels invented. The clothes, the expressions, even the way they hold themselves are so sharply observed that you can almost imagine who talks too much, who knows everybody’s business and who would rather be left alone. And behind them, those rows of houses give way quite suddenly to open hills. That contrast says an enormous amount about the communities Carpanini paints without needing to spell any of it out.
