Seaside moments, captured with effortless charm 🎨

In this work, Archibald Campbell Mellon brings the beach to life with his signature touch — loose, confident brushwork and a wonderful sense of movement. Figures gather, children play, and the sky shifts gently above, all rendered with a spontaneity that feels both immediate and timeless.
There’s a warmth and nostalgia here that perfectly captures the spirit of a day by the sea.

Available now at Lambert Fine Art. Enquiries welcome.

Few artists have captured the raw power and elemental majesty of the sea with the sensitivity and authority of David James. Born into humble circumstances, James began his artistic career in London, supported by his first patron—a picture dealer who assisted with his education and with whom he lived for many years.
It was during his time in the north of England that James developed a profound fascination with the sea. A tireless traveller, his interest lay not in specific geographic locations but in the ever-changing light, atmosphere, and movement of the ocean itself. Frequently working in elongated landscape formats, James stripped his compositions of extraneous detail, allowing the sea to command the viewer’s full attention.
These focused marine paintings—devoid of narrative distractions—are now regarded as his most sought-after works. Timeless and breathtaking in their observation, they reveal an artist deeply attuned to nature’s rhythms. James exhibited at the Royal Academy during his lifetime, and his works are represented today in numerous public and private collections.
