We’re delighted to share that the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has been awarded £244,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to support essential conservation work at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.

This much-loved, Grade I listed building is one of the most internationally recognised historic houses associated with Shakespeare and his family. The funding will help us protect the Cottage for future generations as part of our wider programme of planned conservation across the Shakespeare family homes.

Work will begin shortly and continue until March 2027. Anne Hathaway’s Cottage will remain open throughout, giving visitors a great chance to see conservation in action and learn more about the specialist care needed to preserve historic timber-framed buildings.

We are hugely grateful to The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and to National Lottery players, for making this important work possible. We are also grateful to the Michael Bishop Foundation for its generous support of conservation work at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and across our sites.

While Hall’s Croft is currently closed to the public as essential conservation work takes place, we’re opening the doors exclusively on selected dates this May for behind-the-scenes tours.
Edit: There are only TWO dates left with spaces so we recommend booking quickly to avoid disappointment!

Step inside the story of Susanna Shakespeare and her husband John Hall, who made Hall's Croft their home in the early 1600s. One of Stratford’s finest historic houses, the main part of the property was built in 1613.

Led by our volunteers, our special tours will take you up a viewing platform where you'll be able to see the ongoing conservation project happening inside the building whilst discovering more about the people who lived here over generations.

The tours are free to attend, with donations welcome to support the restoration of Hall’s Croft.
