Radiant warmth meets the wild beauty of the Hebrides.

A mixed media piece called 'Landscape Study, Lewis' by David Greenall, currently on display in our summer exhibition, Facing West.

Greenall meticulously hand-mixes his own pigments using raw materials, wax, resin, and oils to capture the intense, shifting light of the Scottish landscape. The vivid golden expanse anchored against deep coastal blues brings incredible energy and texture to this piece.

'Peninsula' by Lisa Houston

Living right on the edge of Scotland’s west coast, Sunart-based artist Lisa Houston draws constant inspiration from the everchanging light and landscape that lies right outside her window.

Every piece begins in the wild—sketched along coastal walks or directly from boat when sailing the coastline—before coming to life as a finished mixed media work in her studio.

100 nautical miles off mainland Scotland lies St Kilda—a wild, magical archipelago of towering sea cliffs, home to a million seabirds and a fascinating history.

Contemporary Scottish landscape artist Kirstie Cohen brings its dramatic atmosphere to life so beautifully here in her painting, 'Stac an Armin'.

I'm always amazed by how many gallery visitors I speak to who have actually made the journey out. Have you ever been?

'Another Bleeding Flower I & II' by Lochaber based multidisciplinary artist Anna Raven, currently on display in our summer group show Facing West.

In Raven's own words:

These prints are made from intaglio printing a conventional etching plate onto handmade paper.

I made the paper from cotton linters which is used as a pure cotton pulp in fine art paper-making, especially for printmaking. The pigment is added to the pulp when liquid and then pressed with the extreme pressure of an adapted lorry jack. I was lucky enough to work in the studio of German artist Hans Dieter Pietch when we both lived in Wiltshire and this was a method pioneered by him.

For over twenty years I have lived in a Marginal Garden with a collection of over 500 species & varieties of Rhododendron with a man who collects them like stamps! Along with an interest in the landscape of the mind, these two forces create a dialogue between the internal and external worlds; our spirit and our place. This is the territory I inhabit.

'Ardnamurchan Blues' by award-winning Moy Mackay Artist. Currently on display in our summer group show Facing West.

Pioneering a unique blend of traditional craft and fine art, Mackay captures Scotland's rural landscapes outdoors in oil pastel before bringing them to life in her studio. She blends fibers much like a painter mixes pigment on a palette, carefully felting each intricate piece.

As a leading authority on felt art, Mackay's work and published books are celebrated worldwide.

Seven gloriously expressive paintings inspired by time spent on the island of Iona by celebrated landscape artist Rose Strang feature in our summer show, Facing West. It’s a place that the artist has returned to time and time again over the course of almost forty years. In Strang’s own words, here’s an insight into what draws her there:

"I go every year to paint and when there I meet others who’ve grown up on the island, whose ancestors lived here, maybe helped with the rebuilding of Iona Abbey, or they could go back to nuns and monks of the 13th century, or maybe even the oldest inhabitants, there several hundred years before Columba arrived across the sea from Ireland.

Every time, I learn something new. Iona sits on the other side of a natural fault-line, its rocks cross an astonishing array of types and eras. After I painted ‘Eilean Calbha from Iona’ I discovered that those foreground rocks are Lewisian Gneiss, the same sort of rock that forms the stones of Callanish on Lewis. They’re the oldest in Britain, among the oldest in the world. So old they pre-date complex multi-cellular life.

In this way, Iona always steeps your imagination in the mystery of time and the strangeness of being here in this moment."

A detail from 'Carnach', one of several newly arrived works in wood and resin by artist Greig Gilchrist. Working from his one person studio on the isle of Lismore, Gilchrist meticulously crafts these captivating pieces, encapsulating seashore treasures gathered from the west coast of Scotland. Taking around three months to complete each piece - from kiln-drying the wood to the final polishing - these eye-catching works are a true labour of love.
