🌊'Wind, waves and whimsy' artist spotlight 🌊

Mike Topham is our whimsy and wire master.

He covers some days for us in the gallery, so that Nicky and Briony can have the occasional day off, when he's not making his wire and mixed media creations based on the simple and humorous things in everyday life. His pieces are incredibly detailed and playful, with their relief mounting giving a sense of movement and life to each piece.

🖌🎨⭐ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ⭐🎨🖌

This week we’re looking at our resident artist Caroline Tucker
And her giant statement canvases!

Vibrant, Joyful, Youthful, Expressive are all words that come to mind when taking in Caroline’s work. So many colours and big brushstrokes all working together in harmony to show off the most iconic scenery along the south west coast in these larger than life energetic paintings.

There is so much to explore in her work, whether your being invited into the piece and gliding around the composition at a distance or close up and admiring the fluidity of the sweeping brushstrokes by an artist who truly lets paint be paint on the canvas.

🔎Material spotlight… Watercolour!🔎🎨🖌💦

Also known by our customers as . . 'Isn't that the tricky one?'

Well it may be true that water can be unpredictable and difficult to control. But letting the paint do it's thing is also the beauty in it! Once you've learned how to use watercolour there are so many different ways to create texture, different brushstroke and build up layers.

We have artists that utilise all these different skills to create completely different styles in their work.

Briony Maple is one of our fab gallery owners!
Briony is a Poole based glass artist specialising in warm glass methods including fusing, slumping and casting. She loves and is inspired by water and our beautiful coastal location with her work full of texture and fluidity to play with the light. She has created some new pieces which are being debuted in the exhibition so definitely worth a visit.

You’ll find her working here regularly too if you ever want to talk about her work or commissions.

Nicky Stockley is one of our fab gallery owners!
Originally from the seaside town of Swanage, Nicky is a painter who also dabbles in ceramics. Wildlife and the natural world inspire Nicky's work. Her stylised paintings use patterns found in nature to create her large, vibrant and incredibly detailed gouache pieces.

You’ll find her working here regularly too if you ever want to talk about her work or commissions.

⭐ARTIST SPOTLIGHT⭐

Colleen du Pon is a Metal Sculptor and Artist Blacksmith originally from Canada and now living in Bridport, West Dorset on England’s Jurassic Coast.

She earned a BA in Silversmithing and Metalwork at Camberwell College of Arts in London where she enrolled to pursue her dream of becoming a Jeweller, but fell in love with Blacksmithing and working hot iron and spent most of her time at the forge and anvil. She was awarded the Bruce Church Travel Scholarship in 2002 and has travelled extensively, working directly with nomadic Blacksmiths in India. Colleen has been working as an Artist Blacksmith and Metal Sculptor since 2007.
Colleen produces a range of work, blending forging with hand, hammer and anvil, with contemporary metalworking processes to create works in mild steel, from functional items to sculpture and architectural work to commission.

🔎Inspiration… Boats🔎

Unsurprisingly, boats are a common and popular feature of many artworks for our artists here on the beautiful south coast. Many of our artists enjoy sailing and being on the water themselves, and others enjoying their presence among our fabulous landscape and on the horizon.
Boats evoke a sense of freedom and adventure, which has definitely been captured by our artists in paint, print, wood, glass and more.

🌊🎨The fabulous Purbeck Arts Weeks are fast approaching! 🎨🌊

This is a wonderful annual event showcasing and highlighting artist, makers and galleries in the iconic Purbecks which makes it a perfect time to visit the area and discover its hidden creative treasures.

During the event we will have our ‘Wind, Waves and Whimsy’ exhibition in the Hollow, a group exhibition of work by Ballard and Bay Gallery’s owners and staff.
You’ll also find us in the PAW guide on page 15! We showcase local, Dorset and Hampshire based artists and makers, many of which based in the Purbeck and close to the gallery; priding ourselves in stocking a wide variety of quality work at a range of prices.
