The gallery showcases the unique artworks of British fine artist and Surface Pattern Designer, Christa McCann-Silver. Christa lives a Minimalist lifestyle and embraces everything Zen and her art reflects these experiences. Creating artworks are an integral part of Christa's daily meditation and a celebration of both her Minimalistic and Zen journey.
The foundation elements within Christa’s artwork takes influence from both Minimalism and the Japanese ‘Zen’ aesthetics of ‘Shibui’. A Japanese term for something that appears simple but is actually complex in detail that balance simplicity with complexity.
★ The key components of Shibui design are:-
☆ Simplicity
☆ Modesty
☆ Silence
☆ Naturalness
☆ Everydayness
☆ Imperfection
Through Christa’s artwork she strives to exhibit the aesthetics of Shibui.
WATERCOLOUR
Unique creations through continuous experimental approaches with regards to materials, techniques and subject. Pushing the boundaries with its time honoured 'rules', and asking the viewer to see the medium in a new and contemporary light. Artworks, that re-evaluate traditions and conventions, but at the same time keep the characteristics and the essence of the beautiful fluid gems of Watercolour. Through continuous exploration Christa has developed two unique watercolour application techniques.
INK
The Ink drawings are worked in a similar approach to Christa’s Watercolours. They also push the boundaries of tradition, in the areas of subject, inking style, materials and techniques. Creating with line and stippling (dots) are Christa’s two favourite ink texturing techniques. As layers build so does the intensity of tone. Weaves and stitch are another influence seen in the form of line and mark-making (dots and dashes).
SIGNATURE STYLE
★ SUBJECTS - Non-Objective, Minimalism and Shibui.
★ REPEATS - Geometric or stylised motifs/mark-making are arranged to form repeat patterns and tessellations. Many of these employ a square grid system as their basic structure, where motifs are placed and repeated. Occasionally other repeat systems such as the half-drop are used, but Christa always finds herself returning to the square grid. Christa states, ‘there is something pleasing and even reassuring about a repeat pattern’. Repeats are constructed by hand using traditional methods.
★ SILHOUETTES - Christa frequently uses silhouettes (motifs) within her artwork (and shaped supports) as a vehicle to display her repeat patterns/mark making and paint effects. Silhouettes usually take the form of simple shapes found in everyday objects, nature and experiences. A silhouette, usually presents two areas (fields): a positive and negative space, which is calling to be adorned with pattern. The design process begins by producing an outline drawing of the subject. The drawings aim is to simplify the subject, but taking care not to lose the essence of shape that initially attracted Christa. In order to make the silhouette resonate, consideration to the art element of 'contrast' with regards to colour, tone, texture or pattern, is essential to the design.
★ CLOSE-FOCUS DETAIL – This approach is seen in Christa's Watercolour and Ink ‘Zoom Series’. Christa states, 'It’s all in the creating, then capturing the wealth of magical and serendipitous effects created by the intricate interaction of pigments and water on paper. The ‘Zoom Series’ aims to showcase the beautiful patterns and textures created by the fluid gem watercolour. This design approach is a major element that contributes to signature style'. ★ CLOSE-UP COMPOSITION – On finishing a painting, Christa is eager to apply her viewfinder and search for hidden gems. Taking the viewfinder in for a ‘close-up’ approach will often highlight areas of detail that stand as abstract compositions themselves within the main piece. This stage in the creative process is a major element that contributes to Christa's signature style.
WATERCOLOUR & MIXED MEDIA
While Christa's main body of work focuses on watercolour, she continually explore the inclusion of other media, such as -
- Metal - Incorporating metal, either in the form of metal leaf, shell pigment, powder, glitter or metallic thread. Christa favours white metals such as silver, platinum, pewter and tin whilst for the warm metallic’s she uses copper and bronze.
- Graphite
- Charcoal
- Ink
Christa explores non-traditional painting supports for her watercolours such as wood, metal, textile and ceramic. Keeping an open mind on using other media and techniques/processes, allows Christa to expand her visual vocabulary. Although, always careful not to have the alien material detract from the dominant ‘watercolour’, but to enhance it.
INSPIRATION
★ WATERCOLOUR - Christa states, ‘Watercolour itself, is the focus and the primary consideration is to display the characteristics and essence of the beautiful, fluid gem that is ‘Watercolour’. I explore pigment properties/characteristics, painting supports, paint effects and both traditional and non-traditional paint application techniques. It’s all in creating and then capturing the wealth of magical and serendipitous effects created by the intricate interaction of pigments and water on paper. This approach, frees me to explore watercolour, thereby enabling the styles Non-Objective, Minimalism and Shibui to showcase the art form ‘Watercolour’.
★ TEXTILES - Weaves and stitch are a major influence and are seen in the form of line and mark-making (dots and dashes).
★ GEMSTONES form an endless source of inspiration. They provide a wealth of colour, texture and pattern, which are keystone elements in Christa’s artwork. Watercolour being a beautiful, fluid, luminous and transparent gem is perfect for capturing the essence of gemstones.
★ SURFACE TEXTURE - Support - Christa states, ‘The painting/drawing supports surface texture is often a major art element consideration, therefore, I am always exploring various supports. For example with regards to watercolour I often use non-traditional supports such as found supports (packing card, tissue paper, garment patterns, pages from books...), wood, textile and ceramic allows me to expand my visual vocabulary and for one, offering interesting surface texture. For traditional watercolour supports, I favour Arches Aquarelle and Fabriano Artistico watercolour papers. These have a beautiful smooth (Hot Pressed; HP) surface texture. HP being my favourite paper surface texture to work with, as this suits the paint application techniques that I have developed. However, the HP surface also provides me with a blank canvas on which to explore surface texture techniques. I create my own surface textures using techniques such as scoring, sanding, punching, piercing and folding’.
- Paint Techniques - Through various application techniques Christa is able to create a wealth of visual and actual textures.
