HIRE US !! Just wanted to flag up that our venue GS Artists on Swansea High Street is available for hire; for one off events or more regular use. We would favour not-for-profit organisations, charities, artist groups or similar.
We can offer use of equipment, seating and tables, and some installation support if needed. The rates are factored to cover costs, so reasonable. Just send us an email with any enquiries- [email protected]

Like a lot of organisations at the moment, we are struggling with funding and hate waste so keen that the venue is used, but we treasure our space and would want it to be used well.
GS Artists is project funded, which is always a tight rope as most grants are for production and not core costs.
We have managed with several income streams, including artworks for sale, but over the last nine months these streams have pretty much dried up.

We will be advertising some of our especially produced artworks for sale soon, meanwhile if we know any great grant writers out there please shout! 🙏

Gs Artists & the 9to90 Creative Community want to send a massive thank you to Jack Moyse & Menna Buss,
Over the last few months, the 9to90 have been very fortunate to be working with artists Jack and Menna. The results of this kind, calm interaction with the group are up at the Gallery now. Through a series of sessions working with a variety of textile methods the group were encouraged to talk about their own experiences of the Welfare State. All their experiences were treated with respect & their words used in the resulting textiles at their discretion,
Come & see the results! All visitors are invited to be part of the exhibition by contributing via messages on labels or small pennants, the craft table will be up with the usual free refreshments.

The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday 12- 4 pm until May 2nd.
We can also open by appointment if you email us at [email protected]

With thanks to Arts Wales & The National Lottery Community Fund for their support.

Through a series of workshops, the artists have created space for participants to reflect on and share their experiences of the welfare system, encouraging creative expression of thought without fear of judgement.

The sessions have started well, with a full house of 24 working with the two artists, alongside the usual support team

Firstly, they introduced themselves to the group, and Jack shared his lifelong work relating to his disability — diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD), a condition that means his muscles are weakening faster and earlier than normal. Ten years on, he still lives with daily pain. He explains that his artworks have become his way of channeling frustration and communicating his feelings about his own situation and the experiences of others dependent on the welfare state in order to piece together a life worth living.
Menna, participatory textiles artist with over 20 years experience of facilitating creative sessions for people living with life challenges, shared examples of her work with the group. Menna’s extensive collaborative textile pieces, created with groups around Wales include soft sculpture, folk costume and a giant kite - all frameworks offer co-creation and celebration. Menna specialises in Arts in Health facilitation, she has mentored artists for WAHWN and partnered with various museums and galleries. As a trained costume designer-maker and teacher, Menna brings a wealth of skills and knowledge to sessions - her practice is guided by the soft medium of cloth and infinite possibilities of storytelling with print, text and stitch.

The first session involved looking at textile banners made for parades and protests, exploring sewing machine practice (a first time for many in the group) to make a basic patchwork. As skills and responses grow, participants will create textile contributions to a collaborative banner. The group have been given full access to the gallery, and are documenting the process, with notes, images and photographs from all stages being put up on the wall, a studio for exploration.

‘A Sorry State - Part 1’
Over the next months we will be joined by artists Menna Buss & Jack Moyse, sharing an incredible opportunity for both workshops & exhibition. Entitled ‘A Sorry State’, they say of the project:

“We aim to create safe, accessible spaces for people to reflect on and share their experiences of the welfare system, encouraging participants to share thoughts creatively without fear of judgement. Through talking and making, the workshops encourage collective expression and peer connection. Participants’ contributions will inform the development of a new artwork, ensuring their voices sit at the centre of the project. The sessions prioritise care, dignity, and consent throughout. They aim to build confidence in creative self-expression, teaching new skills associated with textile working.”

The sessions include an introduction to examples of banner & quilt making, with the aim of producing a large community textile piece which, alongside all the development work, will go on display at GS Artists this April.

Over the coming months, Menna will guide the group through pinwheel patchwork, appliqué (inspired by Welsh blankets), and the magical process of cyanotype amongst other methods of textile expression.

The act of creating is being used to encourage conversation, both Menna and Jack will chat with the group about the welfare state, disability, & community.
Some of the questions posed include;
·       How would you describe your current relationship with the welfare system?
·       Do you think there’s a difference between how you see yourself and how the system sees you?
·       If you could redesign the welfare system, what would it look like?”

All conversations are private, testimonials anonymised to ensure protection, any information shared will be guided by participants. The final banner, alongside much of the preparatory material, will be on display at the gallery for 10 days and will be invigilated by the 9to90 group themselves, who are very keen to share this work with the wider community.
