STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works. The Museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway - a railway network that, through the pioneering vision and genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was regarded as the most advanced in the world.

'St Mark's Church and the First Swindon Engine 1845-1846' by John Webb is currently on show at Museum & Art Swindon until 12 September along with other artworks from artists participating in the upcoming Swindon Open Studios.

St Mark's Church, Swindon was dedicated in April 1845. It is adjacent to the main line and is associated with well-known Swindon railway figures. The first railway engine to be built at Swindon, the Great Western, was built as a 2-2-2 locomotive in April 1846. In June of that year it achieved a speed of 74½mph. This painting by John H Webb is an imaginative composition showing both the church and the engine in the same scene.

Artist biography:
John Webb was a Swindon Fine Artist and ceramicist. He studied at Swindon Art School and Birmingham School of Arts & Crafts. His watercolours and oils include landscapes, wildlife, churches and his truly historic paintings of the Swindon Railway Workshops.

Museum & Art Swindon is open on Euclid Street in Swindon.
The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 4.30pm. Entry to the museum is FREE.

Swindon Open Studios is an annual community exhibition during which artists invite members of the public into their studios, homes and exhibition spaces for a chance to see where and how their art is made across two consecutive weekends. 19-20 and 26-27 September. What are your plans for the weekend? Are you travelling anywhere by train?🚂

This image from August 1929 shows a busy Platform 1 at Paddington Station. Fashionable ladies in their drop waist dresses and cloche hats have just arrived in London, perhaps heading to the West End. In amongst the crowd families with young children are waiting to board trains destined for the seaside towns of the South West.
