Our next volunteer sharing their experience for is the wonderful Chloe!

“I have been volunteering at Middleton Hall for the last year, and I’m here once or twice a week as I balance this with shift work and volunteering at other places – I do Visitor Welcome, bookshop, and am in the History Research Group.

I decided to volunteer here as I was looking to gain experience in heritage as my degree was in conservation.

I would definitely recommend volunteering here as it’s a fun place and you get to meet lots of people!”

A heartfelt thank you to all our Crafting Group volunteers for all their continuous hard work! Your amazing skills add so much to Middleton Hall and Gardens! 🙏

Our Craft Group make items to enhance the exhibitions put on by our History Research Group (spotlight on them tomorrow!), as well as items to sell on their very own craft stall with all proceeds going to the upkeep of the hall and gardens! This is ideal for any creatives out there wanting to meet like minded-people, putting their existing skills to good use and teaching each other new skills along the way!

Our latest article explores two fascinating entries from Sir Henry Willoughby’s household accounts dating from May 1526.

One records a reward paid to the Hall’s huntsman after he broke his bow, offering an insight into the importance of archery and hunting in Tudor England. The other notes expenses incurred by a visiting pursuivant staying with the Avery family, opening a window onto the world of heralds, royal messengers and the College of Arms.

From the cost of replacing a longbow to the duties of Tudor pursuivants, these brief account entries reveal the wider stories hidden within everyday records from Middleton Hall nearly 500 years ago.
