This second generation family business has recently moved to a new purpose built studio to allow further development in picture and frame conservation....specialising in oversize items. Everett Fine Art have specialised in the restoration of oil paintings for over fifty years and undertaken an extraordinary variety and complexity of work including:-
relining (conserving damaged and old canvases)

retouching
panel transfers
over-sized canvases
collection hanging. This has enabled us to establish a team of highly skilled and accomplished restorers and conservators who work both at the new purpose built Studio and on site. We work for large institutions and small family collections and will give our firm undertaking that for any painting we restore we will use the sympathy and attention for which we have established our reputation. We provide a comprehensive picture framing and frame conservation service. From our large collection of antique molds suitable for frames for paintings, drawings and prints. We supply:

dealers
art agents
auctioneers
museums
and private collectors
with expertly researched framing. These are supported by a broad knowledge of framing history and craftsmen with traditional skills.

That tiny but critical skill of filling (or stopping) the paint losses prior to retouching. The restorers pigments differ from the original paint…it lacks bulk and the ground and preparation layers. These have to be replaced to keep the paint surface even.

Getting there…preparations completed and now to bond the old fragile and delicate original canvas onto its new supporting canvas…this traditional reversible glue should last for the next 200 years.

This is the method that I have practiced and perfected for our climate (and materials) and works best for me for the best results…other liners and conservators might disagree…I’d love to hear👂

This is one of those paintings that needs careful and correct diagnosis and treatment not to repeat and previous failing….it might, of course, not be in a previous treatment but in the conditions that it has hung…however, I suspect a combination of both in this case.

These untouched paintings only pass by the studio infrequently, but the state of preservation is testament to the quality of the original materials..and being left in a stable environment (heat/humidity) ever since.

Most of the time spent in a successful canvas conservation comes in solving a complexity of problems and decision making during the preparation stages rather than the lining itself.

Stretchers, in the world of canvas conservation, are given a very low priority and often are never even mentioned….but these little babies do all the heavy lifting for a successful treatment and quietly do there job over 100’s of years….often because they are designed and made properly.

One of those weekly processes that I have repeated and experimented with for over 40 years… …..this is my best go-to version

Family portraits…however grand or noble…. or just small and seemingly insignificant need just a little bit of love to be able to enjoy fully and to let them live a little longer with their wonderful histories

Elizabeth Cross, depicted here, looks far from exciting but they me try to convince you otherwise…here goes!
