What a fantastic first day we are having after the extensive refurbishment of Tenby Museum and Art Gallery. It is lovely to once again greet visitors and residents who are keen to see the new-look galleries and exhibitions.

We also had the privilege of welcoming Sarah Eastlake, Beth Rich, and Jill Ramsay (see photograph), who came this morning to view the E. J. Head oil painting of their relative, Betty Domleo (later Betty Eastlake).

Their kind gift of this beautiful art work is a wonderful addition to the permanent collection: 'Tenby Museum and Art Gallery,' they told us this morning, 'is the right place for her', and the portrait takes centre stage in the Wilfred Harrison Gallery.

We close over the weekend, but will be back open at 10am on Monday 6th April.

We also have a special offer for that day only! The adult ticket price will be £5, and concessionary tickets £4.50. Accompanied children under 13 have free entry.

So, come along and see what has been happening behind the scenes!

We had the great pleasure last week of a visit from Beth Rich and Sara Eastlake, who, along with their sister Jill, have generously donated this stunning portrait of their Grannie, Betty Domieo, (later Eastlake), to the museum.
It was painted by one of the museum's favourite artists, E.J. Head and is now in pride of place in the Wilfred Harrison gallery, which has been completely rehung in preparation for the museum's reopening.
We will be highlighting more of the work featured in the rehang over the next few weeks online, but for those who want to see the work in situ, we will be reopening on the 3rd of April, and we look forward to seeing you and getting your feedback on the gallery's fresh new look.

The exhibition, 'Gwen John: Strange Beauties', has now opened, and includes three staff-favourite paintings, and a poetry book with sketches belonging to our very own Gwen John collection. The exhibition brings together drawings, watercolours and oil paintings from across the globe, and this retrospective is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain a new insight into Gwen’s work and artistic influences.
Our Collections Officer, Kyle, was lucky enough to be invited to the preview on Wednesday 4th February: ‘It was a privilege to see some of our most significant works exhibited amongst others from the National Library of Wales, the Tate, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC, and to meet in person a member of the John Family. It has taken two years of painstaking work to organise the loan from Tenby Museum and Art Gallery to the National Museum Cardiff, and having seen this amazing exhibition, it was DEFINITELY worth it!’

The exhibition, 'Gwen John: Strange Beauties', is on at the National Museum Cardiff until 28th June.

We are on TV!

Some of the important art works from our Gwen John collection will feature in the new National Museum Cardiff exhibition, 'Gwen John: Strange Beauties'.

In the documentary, ‘Keeping the World Away - Finding Gwen John’, which coincides with the opening of the exhibition, our previous curator Hannah discusses Gwen's early life and possible influences, as well as the reasons Gwen is so significant to her and all the staff at the museum. Nicky Wire from the Manic Street Preachers, and a previous exhibiting artist here in Tenby, also talks about how Gwen John has inspired his own artworks, one of which we have in the museum collection.

‘Keeping the World Away - Finding Gwen John’ will be broadcast on BBC 2 at 9pm on Thursday 5th February, and ‘Gwen John: Strange Beauties’ opens on Saturday 7th February.

Trish Livingstone, one of our volunteers, discovered this object tucked away in the bottom of a box, unlabelled and up to this point forgotten.
Someone, somewhere at some time made a mould and cast this face in lead.
Over the years the features have softened, and its memories lost,
so we are now on a mission to rediscover its story. If you have any thoughts on how, when or where our face came from, we would be delighted to hear from you
