Art & Space Gallery is pleased to introduce artist Deborah Smith, whose expressive figurative works explore the quiet language of the body and emotion.

Born in Sheffield and based in Kent for many years, Deborah’s artistic journey began through early formal study before evolving into a deeply personal and intuitive practice. Working with acrylic and oil paint alongside pastel, charcoal, and graphite, she creates layered compositions rich in movement, texture, and emotional depth.

Deborah’s paintings balance energetic mark-making with delicate figurative lines, allowing forms to emerge and recede through colour and gesture. Each work reveals a thoughtful interplay between vulnerability and resilience, presence and absence.

Deborah describes her work as an exploration of the quiet language of the body - gestures and emotions that often express what words cannot.

‘Through colour, texture, and composition, I seek to reveal both vulnerability and resilience, allowing each painting to evolve as an intuitive and deeply personal response. The figure becomes a vessel for navigating memory, presence, and the courage to be seen.’

The Gallery is delighted to present the work of local landscape artist David Miles.

After studying at Woolwich Polytechnic School of Art, David enjoyed a distinguished career in advertising as an Art Director, working with leading London agencies and studios for nearly two decades. In 1977, he began freelancing as a Lettering Artist and Typographic Designer, developing the refined sense of composition and detail that continues to shape his paintings today.

David now works from his studio in Challock, capturing the quiet beauty of the Thames and Medway estuaries through richly atmospheric oil paintings. His work is deeply inspired by the marshes, tidal creeks, and traditional Spritsail Barges of North Kent, landscapes he has loved since childhood.

Through his paintings, David invites viewers to pause and reflect on the ever-changing relationship between light, water, and land. Each canvas conveys both the tranquillity and enduring character of these historic coastal environments, celebrating the textures, colours, and rhythms of the Kent landscape and beyond.

A warm thank you to everyone who joined us on 30 April for our “Meet the Artist” evening with local landscape photographer Ian Boswell.

It was a truly lovely evening, made even more special by your commitment and enthusiasm. I’m incredibly grateful to Ian for sharing his lifelong passion and offering such thoughtful insight into the stories behind his work.

Evenings like this are a reminder of how powerful art can be. Your support is at the heart of everything I do, helping to nurture creativity and showcase the work of inspiring artists.

Julian Williamson is a local artist driven by a deep and enduring passion for creation. His work celebrates the refined craft of woodturning - where masterful technique meets an intuitive understanding of the material. From elegantly formed vessels to captivating wall sculptures, each piece carries its own distinct character, shaped with care, precision, and quiet artistry.

Julian skilfully transforms raw materials into singular works of art. These are more than objects, they are stories: thoughtful, richly expressive, and deeply individual. In his hands, each piece of wood finds its own voice and form.

This lifelong passion and dedication to his craft led to the creation of his book, Artistic Woodturning: Raw Nature to Fine Art, available in the gallery and on our website. Through it, Julian invites those who appreciate wood to discover their own creative potential, develop a personal style, and explore new and fulfilling avenues of expression.
