The Colonel Stephens Railway Museum

The Colonel Stephens Railway Museum Recording the Career of Holman Fred Stephens, Light Railway Promoter,
Engineer and Manager, His Family, His Railways and His Successors.

The collection was first displayed in the Town Museum in Station Road, Tenterden which was opened in 1977 in what were once the railway stables. The opening of a new display in a building in premises adjacent to the station at Tenterden was a great step forward when it opened in stages between 1996 and 1998. Display and interpretation could be vastly improved and documents stored on one site. Suff

icient space was now available to display a locomotive, even if it was the smallest standard gauge locomotive in Britain, the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire locomotive 'Gazelle'. The present display is designed to inform and entertain a general non-specialist visitor through displays and models for an hour. The collection began in the 1960s largely through the foresight of Philip Shaw, the Kent and East Sussex Railways Historian, who began putting aside items donated by former employees of the Stephen's empire. W H Austen junior in particular, was a considerable source of material, much of which he had inherited from his father. Following nationalisation in 1948 and the closure of Colonel Stephens' office at Salford Terrace, Tonbridge, a large chest was stuffed with papers relating to the various companies and this sat unopened for 30 years or so in the porch of William Austen's home. It proved to be a veritable treasure trove of papers and small artefacts, some of which have still to be sorted and indexed. We must be thankful that other employees also retained material from the offices, because everything else was taken away and burnt. Fortunately, a large number of personal relics of Colonel Stephens have survived including nearly all the furniture and paraphernalia of his office, a representation of which may be seen in the Town Museum. This includes his roll-top desk and office chair, wicker filing trays, ledgers, pictures, rubber stamps, brief case and even pens, pencils and pieces of chalk. We also have the Colonel's drawing table and stool, his stationery cabinet, and his drawing office and surveying equipment. These are all displayed in the Museum as a representation of the Colonel's Office. Other bygones of the great man have also remarkably survived and most may be seen - his masonic regalia, bible, camera, family snapshots, pocket watches, walking sticks, vesta case, and his cigar case containing the last unsmoked cigar at the time of his death. A particular prize is the collection of family letters and papers spanning nearly 50 years. The archive collection embraces material from all the 16 railways associated with Colonel Stephens and a general selection of artefacts may be seen in the Museum. It is only a selection because lack of space prevents more being displayed. Included are timetable posters, trespass signs, nameplates, permanent way materials, documents, tickets, notices and a host of other miscellaneous items.

Our museum has recently received a donation of over 40 limited edition decorative wall plates, in various shapes and sizes, depicting a wide range of colourful locomotive and railway scenes. In good condition with no evident chips or cracks. some already have hangers or hooks fitted and are ready to be displayed. Please see the attached photographs.
Of potential interest to either private or commercial buyers, anyone wishing to acquire this collection, preferably as a job lot, should email the museum at [email protected] with a request to view or a sensible offer. In view of their fragile nature, collection of the dishes is expected to be made in person.

At last! It's been a long wet winter, with much work behind the scenes, but we re-open for the 2026 season on Sunday, 29 March. Thereafter, please check the KESR timetable (https://kesr.org.uk/) as we'll be open every day public trains are running until the end of October. We look forward to welcoming all existing Colonel Stephens' enthusiasts and those yet to discover his fascinating life and career. Why not come along and find out more? Even better, why not join us and help ensure that we have enough volunteers to keep the museum open?

We can report some terrific acquisitions recently. They include a 'Trains Cross Here' road sign, examples of which were widely seen on the K&ESR and the East Kent Railway as well as other of Stephens' lines; a rare SE&CR Leysdown station destination indicator sign, probably from a London terminal; a Webb & Thompson train staff instrument of the kind used to control single line working on sections of the K&ESR and EKR, and two brass oval ownership plates relating to the Manning Wardle locomotive 'Sankey' from the Edge Hill Light Railway. All will be, or are expected to be, on display for visitors by the time we re-open at the end of March, along with a re-vamped display of our East Kent Railway and Coalfields cabinets. Plenty to justify another visit this season.

A Happy New Year to all our followers. The Museum remains closed to the public over the winter months, but will re-open on Sunday, 29 March, and thereafter on all days when there are public train services running on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. We hope to have a number of refreshed displays for the coming season, including several new exhibits. Meanwhile, if you have any queries, would like to get involved, wish to make any donations, or even make a purchase, please contact us by emailing [email protected] or leave a message on 01732 809143. We'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Although the museum is now closed until next Easter, that does not mean we are all taking a well-earned rest. The closed season enables us to get on with those tasks that can't be undertaken while welcoming visitors. One such task this winter is the long-delayed re-carpeting of our existing time-expired flooring. Let's hope the 'new' carpeting lasts as long as the old (25 years!). Not bad after many thousands of visitors over that time. Photos show areas completed, areas to be finished, and offcuts waiting fitting.

The Cavell Van is coming to Dover!

As part of this year’s celebrations, the historic Cavell Van which carried the bodies of Edith Cavell, Charles Fryatt and the Unknown Warrior from Dover to London in 1919 and 1920 is returning to the port for the first time in at least 80 years.

In co-operation with South Eastern Railway, Network Rail and the Port of Dover, the van (which is normally based at the Kent & East Sussex Railway) is spending this year’s Remembrance season alongside the South Eastern & Chatham Railway war memorial at the former Dover Marine station (now Cruise Terminal 1).

The van and memorial will be open for public visiting between 10.00 and 16.00 on:

Friday 7 November
Saturday 8 November
Sunday 9 November
Friday 14 November
Saturday 15 November
Sunday 16 November

Entry will only be with a 1 h timed ticket, which must be booked in advance using this link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cavell-van-at-cruise-terminal-1-formerly-known-as-dover-marine-station-tickets-1787325391359?aff

Tickets will not be available at the main gate.

Free parking is available at Cruise Terminal 1.

In conjunction with this special occasion, K&ESR has published an expanded second edition of the book ‘The Unknown Warrior and the Cavell Van’, which tells the story of the three repatriations and the restoration of the nationally significant vehicle. Copies will be available in Dover.

Once again, generous visitors have recently recorded numerous accolades in our visitors' book, including:
"Beautiful Museum, everything is displayed so well and very interesting"
"Excellent, as always."
"A wonderfully put together museum, maintained enthusiastically."
It gives us much pride to receive comments such as these. But we can only share the treasures we have on display if we have enough volunteers to keep the museum open to the public. Each year we need new blood to replace the regular loss of existing museum attendants due to the passage of time. We also need more help to deal with the adminstration of the museum - it does not run itself!
If you think you can help in either way, please get in touch ([email protected]). Attendants receive on-the-job training, written guidance, and support from experienced volunteers. Volunteers for other roles will be given support and guidance as appropriate. Because the museum opens on a seasonal basis, attendant training can only be undertaken from the start of each season, but it is not too early to register your interest now. We look forward to hearing from you.
PS Anyone planning to visit us before the end of the season should note that we will be open 21-31 October (but not Friday 24th or Monday 27th).
