We’re saying goodbye to ‘True Colours’ at the end of the month - you can browse the full exhibition online until then.

‘True Colours’ has been a celebration of not only the new season, but also the 10th anniversary of three of our gallery favourites joining us: ceramic artist Lucy Burley (), visual artist Jill Hudson (), and silversmith Lucy Spink ().

Their combined efforts for our spring exhibition has been a joy - and not just for spring! A wonderful way to enjoy all the colours or spring year-round.

Lucy works full time as a jeweller and has a BA Hons from Glasgow Art School, as well as two years of practical experience working in a jewellery studio in Trinidad.

She is an award winning jeweller and a member of the and .

Using her Granddad’s old workshop tools, each piece she makes shows the marks of process and the beauty of form, reflecting the patterns of nature: the outlines of rocky outcrops, the surface patterns made by hammers like the texture of stone, and small spurs of silver and gold to replicate the growth patterns of lichens.

“I have spent the majority of my life in big natural landscapes, moorland and parks, mountains and coastlines,” says Lucy.

“The outdoors is my getaway and my sanity. It is the place where I find clarity and calm. I have become more aware of the growing separation of society from the rhythms of nature and have chosen to express this through jewellery.”

We are celebrating ten years of Lucy exhibiting at The Byre Gallery in 2026. You can find more from her collection of one-of-a-kind pieces in our spring exhibition, True Colours, which continues online until the end of May.

Lucy’s vessels are thrown on the wheel using white earthenware clay. She has developed a semi-matt earthenware glaze, smooth to the touch, to which she adds oxides and stains to obtain a wide spectrum of colours. The interior glaze is watertight.

Lucy’s bottles and vessels look wonderful on their own or as part of a collection.

Lucy is exhibiting in ‘True Colours’, which continues online until the end of May. Her ceramic vessels perfectly complement Cornish forest and seascapes by , as well as gorgeous one-of-a-kind jewellery featuring unusual stones by .

If you want to bask in the rich colour palette of spring all year round, you’ll find a collection of canvases by capturing Cornwall’s exquisite natural beauty in our exhibition, ’True Colours’, which continues on our website until the end of May.

A graduate of Falmouth College of Arts, Jill lives and works in Cornwall. She paints the world around her, sometimes what she imagines, but often the beauty of the sea. Her work explores the landscape of life in all its forms – it’s fleetingness, it’s poetry, it’s loneliness, and it’s reality.

‘True Colours’ brings Jill’s work together with a new collection of colourful ceramics by , as well as gorgeous one-of-a-kind jewellery featuring unusual stones by .

Lucy Spink makes contemporary organic jewellery for people who love wild places.

Her designs are inspired by ancient Cornish landscapes, monolith standing stones, and delicate lichen forms. It is everyday jewellery with a touch of timeless raw elegance.

Lucy says, ‘My jewellery is inspired by ancient Cornish landscapes which surround me and the tiny details I find on my daily walks near my studio... I am fascinated by how closely our lives were once bound to the rhythms of nature and use a small element of gold to represent the importance of the natural environment.’

‘The Garden Room’ by Jill Hudson, showing online in ‘True Colours’, is a painting with a story behind it.

It started with inspiration from fellow ‘True Colours’ exhibitor , along with her wonderful image of Eric Ravilious’ work, ‘Flowers on a Cottage Table’ (1937-38).

The composition is inspired by Ravilious’ painting and features elements of Jill’s life at home — an experiment in incorporating narrative.

However, when the colour first went on, according to Jill, “It went rapidly downhill… Even to the point when I thought l’d have to call it a day.”

But Jill persevered. After many reversals of choices, came the idea of the garden room, with the floor as the soil, the wall as the grass, with elements of lupin pattern, the chair — the stripes of the lawn — and of course, the flowers. Only then did it all calm down and start to come together.

The print on the wall hangs above the green chair in Jill’s home. It’s titled ‘The Consolation of Baby Bear’ (Baby Bear has just upset the pudding bowl), by Charlotte Monks. A story within a story.

Lupins are a favourite of Jill’s, as her grandfather used to grow them. Her father inherited the garden, and reluctant gardener that he was, they didn’t want to grow for him. The seeds on the table feature here, as Jill considers maybe she’ll grow some herself.

‘True Colours’ continues online until the end of May, with Jill’s work perfectly complemented by Lucy Burley’s ceramics, including urn vases like the one in the painting. You’ll also find gorgeous one-of-a-kind jewellery featuring unusual stones by .
