Artizan Gallery Gallery - Café - Venue I was sure that here in the Bay we probably had a similar abundance of creative talent but where was it, how to find it?

I have lived in Torbay since 1997 and have always had a love for art in all of its forms and if I wanted an ‘art fix’ I would generally head for St Ives, a place synonymous with art. What was it that places like St Ives had that we were lacking? What is stopping Torbay being for Devon what St Ives is for Cornwall? I attended an ‘Open Space’ event in 2012 to try and get answers to some of these questions – ‘What is Torbay’s Cultural Future?’ Out of that event was borne Torbay Action for Art and from that has come this personal adventure that is Artizan Gallery. I have taken my inspiration from places like Birdwood House in Totnes and TAAG in Teignmouth. My aim is to offer affordable space to artists either running solo exhibitions or working in collaboration with other artists. Exhibitions can run for up to 4 weeks, giving time for repeat visits but also creating a changing space so people always want to come back for more and to see what’s new. The gallery will be fully stewarded giving artists the freedom to come and go as they please. In addition to the gallery there will be a small cafe and some workshop space that can be rented by the hour, for the morning, afternoon or evening. I hope that Artizan will become part of the jig-saw that puts Torbay on the art map for Devon and the South West so please get in touch if you too would like to be involved.

We've loved our new look Summer show "Pensinula", it's been an incredible chance to celebrate the place we call home, and rediscover the reasons this place attracts great artists and inspires great works.

From the land, to the light, to the lore, the atmosphere of the South West is unparalleled, and we think this exhibition has been as well.

We're sad to say that this is our last open exhibition for 2026 at our Fleet Walk space as we prepare for other projects to round out the year and look forward to 2027. A huge thank you to all our participating artists, congratulations to our prize winners, and we look forward to welcoming audiences back to our next show....

Not long now until the Torbay Paint Out series returns with The Great Torre Abbey Paint Out! Taking place this weekend, 5 and 6 September, the two-day event forms the culminating celebration of National Gallery’s Art on Your Doorstep trail, bringing creativity directly into our public spaces.

Saturday 5 September
Follow the Plein Air Artist Trail as ten professional artists capture the landscape live on location. Connecting Torre Abbey and The Pavilion, the route invites you to take a thoughtful walk between two heritage icons and discover diverse creative techniques unfold in real time.

Sunday 6 September
The focus shifts to Torre Abbey’s upper meadow for a Mass Paint Out open to everyone, regardless of prior experience. To spark your inspiration, we are providing still life setups and free art packs to help families and first-time painters dive straight into the creative process.

The Competition
Sunday also marks Torbay’s first Plein Air Art Competition. Creatives of all ages can test their skills by capturing the Abbey grounds within a strict time limit, with finished pieces reviewed by a professional panel for a chance to win the main cash prize and dedicated themed awards.

We are currently hosting Peninsula: The South-West Open 2026. This year, our summer exhibition focuses on the distinct environmental, cultural, and historic tapestry of the South West.

Hosting works from 76 local and national artists, the exhibition spans a rich diversity of mediums - from painting and photography to ceramics and metalwork - and is carefully curated across three themes:

🌊West Country Vistas: Exploring dramatic coastlines, rolling moors, and rural spaces.

⚱️Made of the West: Highlighting tactile materials and heritage crafts from regional makers.

☀️Western Light: Drawing inspiration from the peninsula's famous, luminous quality of light.

Whether you are looking to add a new piece to your collection, support independent practitioners, or simply spend an afternoon enjoying the region's artistic talent, we look forward to welcoming you.

Peninsula – The South West Open 2026

"From Land's End to Westward Ho!"

We are pleased to invite submissions for Peninsula: The South West Open, the newest instalment of our annual summer exhibition at Artizan Collective Gallery.

For over ten years, the English Riviera Summer Open has been a cornerstone of our gallery calendar, bringing a diverse range of national talent to our Fleet Walk venue. For 2026, we are shifting the format. While we continue to welcome submissions from artists nationwide, this year we are asking applicants to respond directly to the physical, cultural, and historic characteristics of the South West.

Running from 26th July to 4th September, this exhibition will curate a specific narrative about the region, grounded in the landscapes, materials, and light that define it.

If selected, your work will be showcased in the English Riviera's only dedicated curated exhibition venue. Artists participating in the physical exhibition will receive:

1️⃣ Inclusion in a 6-week commercial exhibition coinciding with the peak local tourist and collector season.

2️⃣ Inclusion in our dedicated online exhibition micro-site to capture a wider audience and facilitate digital sales.

3️⃣ Bespoke promotional materials designed to help you share your participation professionally with your own network.

Join us at Artizan Collective Gallery this weekend to explore three new exhibitions.

Leading the showcase is Poison Garden - Healing or Deadly, a beautifully observed collaborative exhibition by our studio artists Olya Baklan SWAc, Hannah Taylor, and Bethan Foulkes. Working across watercolours, ceramics, and printmaking, the trio have created a stunning visual response to the complex duality of Devon's native flora. Drawing subtle inspiration from Torbay’s rich botanical history, the collection invites you to look closer at the delicate plants that line our local hedgerows, thoughtfully exploring the fine line between nature's capacity to heal and to harm.

Alongside this showcase, we are also hosting two further collections in the gallery:

🔹 Shades of Blue: A serene, multi-artist exploration of ocean rhythms, coastal light, and the variations of this captivating colour.
🔹 Ukrainian Watercolour Exhibition: A deeply moving international showcase, celebrating cultural resilience and contemporary talent.

It is a beautifully varied weekend of art, and we highly encourage you to drop in and experience these collections for yourself.

Today at Delamore: Meet Our Professional Artists!

Our very first Plein Air at Delamore weekend officially kicks off today with Discover Day. The estate grounds are open, and we are pleased to have four professional artists stationed across the landscape, capturing the beauty of the estate live.

If you are visiting Delamore today, be sure to look out for them, say hello, and watch their incredible practices unfold. Here is who you will find out in the wild today:

Sam Doyle
Sam brings a unique practice that draws its colour from the landscape itself. You will find her working outdoors today, actively foraging and processing natural materials to create plant-based dyes and inks. With over 20 years of experience as an art educator, Sam warmly welcomes visitors to stop and ask questions as she transforms the ecology of the Delamore grounds into contemporary art.

Clare Jenkinson
With a rich background in both textile design and botanical illustration, Clare combines deep observation with a brilliant eye for patterns, rhythms, and colour relationships. Working primarily in oils with a loose, layered, and immediate approach, she captures the delicate details of the natural world, from sweeping landscapes down to the finest flora and fungi.

Maria Rose ROI
An elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and a former Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year contestant, Maria is a master of capturing mood and light. She paints softly evocative en plein air landscapes that celebrate the quiet beauty and subtle, ever-changing seasonal shifts of the English countryside.

James Murch
Deeply inspired by the natural world, James’s open-air oil painting focuses on light, colour, and space. Also a Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year semi-finalist, his practice relies on direct observation and quiet reflection, often finding profound inspiration in the understated, overlooked subjects of our local landscapes.

Come down, soak up the atmosphere, watch the work being created right before your eyes, and see Delamore differently.
