Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery

Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery The definitive destination for Cornish art, artefacts, history, nature and culture.

At the very heart of Cornwall and its cultural life, the museum is a centre of exploration and learning. Using the eclectic collections of Cornish culture, art, antiquities, archaeology, science, and natural history we take people on a journey from deep underground to up into the sky, around the world and way back in time. In doing this, we use our collections to help our communities look forward together.

Goodbye to May, a month uncommonly rich in folklore and seasonal magic 💫

Messengers and travellers of realms, the Oss appears in many celebrations. Traditional ‘Oss’ used in May festivals here in Cornwall were made from horse’s skulls. Horses were symbols of wealth, power and fertility.

This is Penglaz, a traditional style Oss kindly loaned to the Cornish Myths & Legends exhibition by Julia and David Twomlow.

In the studio with Sophie Carter, one of ten women artists featured in the exhibition, What The Land Remembers.

Growing up in Cornwall, Sophie has been strongly influenced by its light and space, responding spontaneously to the skies, sea and coastline. She aspires to evoke an emotional response through her experimental and fluid approach to painting.

In 2016 Sophie enrolled on the first of three courses at Newlyn School of Art, finishing with the Mentoring course in 2018. She now paints professionally full time, working from her studio at Krowji.

Sophie has exhibited from Cornwall to London, here work is in collections worldwide.

Cornwall's connections to the Football World Cup ⚽

Mexico, co-host of the men's tournament this summer, traces its love affair with football back to the arrival of Cornish miners, who left places like St Day for the silver mines of Mineral del Monte.

The miners would play matches on their breaks, and their Mexican co-workers soon took to the game. Matches between English and Mexican teams were played near the Dolores Mine in the late 1800s and early 1900s, where a plaque marks the location as the birthplace of football in Mexico.

“Along with the transfer of steam engine technology and the pasty, the Cornish take pride in the role that they played in the popularization of the beautiful game.” - Sharron Schwartz, historian from Redruth specializing in Cornish migration.
