The Hepworth Wakefield Garden is open daily and free to enjoy 🌿

Tom Stuart-Smith’s design draws inspiration from its unusual setting between 19th-century red-brick mills and a 21st-century art gallery, edged by the River Calder. It echos the striking, angular shapes of the David Chipperfield-designed gallery while harnessing a naturalism that reflects Barbara Hepworth’s deep connection to the landscape.

As well as Stuart-Smith’s distinctive planting, there are outdoor sculptures by Sir Michael Craig-Martin, Barbara Hepworth and Halima Cassell.

Barbara Hepworth’s drawings are often eclipsed by her sculpture work but they show a highly skilled draughtsmanship.

Hepworth would often combined her drawings with paint and she described them as ‘sculptures born in the disguise of two dimensions’.

The Hepworth Wakefield houses a range of Hepworth’s drawings, from her geometric based works to her portraits.

If you’ve visited our current exhibition, Mrinalini Mukherjee: Unbound Forms - Women Sculptors of India and Bangladesh, you might have noticed a selection of installation instructions on display.

These handwritten instructions by Mrinalini Mukherjee (1949-2015), photographed by Ranjit Singh (1946-2022), direct the approach to installing a sculpture, including the right location for hanging, which parts of it to handle, and the importance of maintaining its symmetry.

Whether it’s a quick warm drink before your commute, a working breakfast, or a brunch meeting, our food and drink menus highlight locally-sourced produce and ingredients that are made in-house by our team of talented chefs.
