The 35 metre high viewing tower provides outstanding views across this UNESCO World Heritage Site and the River Tyne, in a place of great historical significance, both ancient and contemporary. Our current opening hours are 10am-5pm, daily. Please see our website for events and exhibitions information. www.segednumromanfort.org.uk

Monkey has made another journey across Hadrian's Wall! He's safe and sound with us here at Segedunum waiting to hitch his next ride with some friendly wall walkers.

Very nice to see he's been looked after and even gifted some new jewellery since we saw him last.

We've given him a little passport in his backpack so he can log his journey; we'd love to see it again next time he visits us.

World Heritage Day | 18 April 🌍

People have always been fascinated by the past – even the Romans themselves. Roman writers recorded history, poets like Lucretius described the development of early tools, and collectors gathered objects they believed told stories of earlier times.

This Neolithic polished stone axe, found here at Segedunum Roman Fort, was already thousands of years old when a Roman picked it up. We don’t know whether they recognised it as a man‑made tool, but in later periods stone axes were often believed to have magical powers and were worn as protective amulets. It’s possible the Romans shared similar beliefs – making this object a fascinating link between past societies and their shared curiosity about history.
