🛡️ Object spotlight: Apis bull brooch

As today, Sunday 21 June, marks the longest day of the year when the sun is at its most powerful ☀️ we're featuring this beautiful brooch, on display in Following the Eagle, our current exhibition.

This brooch, shows the Egyptian god Apis with a sun disc between his horns, a symbol of solar power and life. It’s a fascinating reminder of how ideas travelled far beyond Egypt, reaching as far as Hadrian’s Wall.

Yesterday, Segedunum Roman Fort welcomed local schools, Walking With in North Tyneside, English for Speakers of Other Language groups and community organisations for a special Refugee Week picnic.

Together, we shared food, stories, creative activities and moments of joy -exploring this year’s theme of courage.

From active play with Rise North East to crafts with North Tyneside Art Studio the afternoon was full of creativity, laughter and connection.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create such a welcoming and inspiring space.

💪 At Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum Fort, the Monument to the Builders of Hadrian's Wall honors the Centurions whose leadership was crucial during the construction. We’re open as normal on Monday 25 May – and there’s plenty to discover 🌟
Did you know the Romans loved growing herbs to flavour their food? Many of the herbs we still use today were first brought to Britain by them!

👩‍🌾 Get hands-on:
Have a go at planting your own Roman herbs to take home – how well will yours grow?

🔍 Explore and discover:
Follow our Roman Herbs trail around the museum and outdoor areas to spot different herbs, then visit our herb garden to see them growing.

Free entry to museum for children and young people aged 21 and under and NE28 residents; charges apply for adults.

This event is part of our Ways to Play series of free and low-cost family-friendly activities taking place in museums and galleries across Tyneside.

Make your Ways to Play adventure a great value day out by travelling to our venues by the Metro and / or Ferry. Up to three children aged 11 and under can travel for free on the Metro and the Shields Ferry with a fare-paying adult. 🛡️ Discover the stories behind Roman objects at Segedunum…

These decorative pendants for the chest of a horse where uncovered from the River Rhine, near Xanten, Germany. The name of the owner – called Libicus (‘Libyan’) – has been added in dots and are thought to be from the First Century CE.

🛡️ Object spotlight: Shield boss with lion’s head

On display now in our Following the Eagle at exhibition, this striking shield boss features a bold lion’s head design.

It has a punched inscription reading: T L VICI AVRELIO CATIA.
The shield’s owner, Aurelius Catianus served in the ‘turma’ (cavalry unit) commanded by a man called Lucius Vicius.
Date: c. AD 75-110
