🌼 Spring at Warkworth 🌼

There’s something truly special about seeing the golden sweep of daffodils beneath the ancient walls of Warkworth Castle. Each year, as winter fades, the castle grounds are transformed into a sea of yellow, drawing visitors, photographers, and locals alike to this iconic Northumberland view.

The castle itself dates back to the 12th century, later becoming a stronghold of the powerful Percy family, whose impressive keep still dominates the landscape today. Over centuries, as the castle shifted from fortress to romantic ruin, its surrounding grounds softened too—becoming a place not just of history, but of seasonal beauty.

The daffodils have become part of that story. While not medieval in origin, their long-established presence across the castle mound and outer grounds has turned them into a beloved tradition of spring. Today, the display is considered one of the most striking natural features of the site, attracting visitors and photographers from afar and forming an “iconic” image of the castle each year.

For many, these blooms symbolise renewal—nature reclaiming a place shaped by centuries of conflict, power, and change. Beneath the towering stone walls, the daffodils remind us that even the most historic landscapes continue to evolve.

If you’ve ever stood here in spring, you’ll know—it’s not just a view, it’s a feeling. 💛

Spring is on its way, and the first daffodils are beginning to brighten the grounds of Warkworth Castle 🌼✨

There’s something truly special about seeing these cheerful yellow blooms set against the dramatic medieval walls of the castle.

Daffodils (botanical name Narcissus) are among the very first flowers to bloom each year, usually flowering from late February through April, depending on the weather. They’re hardy perennials, meaning they return year after year, and they thrive in well-drained soil with plenty of spring sunshine.

Did you know?
🌼 Daffodils grow from bulbs planted in autumn.
🌼 They symbolise new beginnings and are often associated with hope and renewal.
🌼 Once established, daffodil bulbs multiply underground, creating even bigger displays each spring.

As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, more blooms will appear, creating a golden welcome for visitors. Keep an eye out on your next visit — it’s the perfect time for a spring stroll and a photo or two 📸💛
