🌊 From the Sea View - Last Chance 🌊

Angela Gould's inspiring exhibition, From the Sea View, comes to a close at the end of next week 🐚

On first glance, the Warrington mathematician-turned-artist's collection of hand-sewn cross-stitch tapestries are simply a recreation of the Cornish coast.

But - crafted during a time of profound struggle and isolation during the pandemic - the work has come to embody the healing power of memory and creativity, a longing for connection with family and a hope-filled vision of better days ahead ♥️

From the Sea View gained national recognition at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024 - but we're delighted Angela chose Warrington Museum and Art Gallery for her inaugural solo show.

🎶 Introducing the Warrington Music Hall A-Z 🎶

Did you know that Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel, George Formby and Buffalo Bill all performed in Warrington?

Music halls of the mid 19th and early 20th centuries are often regarded a remnant of another era.

But looking back at the likes of the Public Hall in Rylands Street, the Gaiety Theatre of Varieties in Sankey Street and Palace and Hippodrome in Friars Gate offers a fascinating glimpse of how previous generations were entertained 📜🏋️‍♂️

In that spirit, we're pleased to introduce a fantastic new resource on our website which has been painstakingly created by Archives volunteer Carol Mayo 🔎

The Warrington Music Hall A-Z looks at who trod the boards in Warrington between 1850 and 1930 – a time of aquatic artists, magicians, escapologists, mind readers, contortionists, ventriloquists, wire walkers and siffleur whistlers (bird impressionists)!

It was also an era when values were very different – astounded audiences saw the likes of Maximilian - ‘The World’s Most Wonderful Chimpanzee’, Tiny Tim - ‘The Smallest Man In The World’ or Fitz - ‘The Famous Boxing Kangaroo’! 🦘🥊

Our full programme is now LIVE, and we’ve pulled together this year’s programme in an easy-to-follow guide so you don't miss a thing! 🎭🎶

Here are the key festival locations for 2026:

📍 Parr Hall
Step beneath Luke Jerram’s extraordinary MARS installation, with a whole programme of events taking place under the Red Planet. From yoga, sound baths, family crafts and Baby Rave to Cosmic Groove presents: Celestia, HENGE and a special DJ night with Dave Haslam, Stephen Morris & Gillian Gilbert (The Other Two/New Order) & Special Guest TBA 👀, Parr Hall is set to be a key location across the festival.

📍 Queens Gardens
Enjoy a weekend of live music with Garden Sounds on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July, before the Family Garden Party returns on Saturday 25 July for an afternoon of free family-friendly fun in the heart of town.

📍 Cineworld Warrington
On Tuesday 21 July, Made By Me Film Festival returns for a special evening screening celebrating young filmmakers, with the event running from 6pm to 8.30pm.

📍 Sky Garden
On Thursday 23 July, the whimsical TREES: Tale of the Rootkin brings tree-themed crafts, activities and performances for all the family to Sky Garden, running from 11am to 3pm.

📍 Warrington Museum & Art Gallery
Head to the Museum for The Story of Old Billy on Friday 24 July, Mark Bradley’s artist’s talk on Sunday 26 July, and two exhibitions: What is this Hubbub? and Within the Folds.

📍 Winmarleigh House
On Friday 24 July, COW Cabaret brings an evening of local creativity, performance and cabaret energy from 7pm to 10pm.

📍 Bank Park
Look up, look closer and expect something spectacular as PIGMENTS - a free aerial circus spectacular - arrives at Bank Park on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July, bringing free and family-friendly outdoor performance to the festival weekend.

📍 Time Square
On Saturday 25 July, enjoy Batida Rio Samba Band from 5pm to 6pm, followed by two free performances of A Place Between Mass & Echoes at 6pm and 8pm.

WALKING DAY - A TRIP BACK IN TIME

There's been a lot of talk about Walking Day recently with the historic event entering a new era and period of change.

In light of financial pressure, Warrington Borough Council is no longer able to fund and organise Walking Day.

But thankfully the tradition will continue thanks to the 'Walking Day Reborn Group' - a coalition of church leaders and community members - who will present the reimagined event on July 4.

📜 As Walking Day starts a new chapter, the news has inspired us to dip into the Archives - so here's a taste of what it was like in 1910!

After the Walking Day procession, most Sunday Schools originally went off for an afternoon of sports and, of course, tea! ☕

Preparations for the celebratory picnic had often begun the day before as the Warrington Examiner reported in 1928: "The local bakeries had prepared their thousands of meat pies and guard was being kept in many a distant field in the neighbouring countryside where piles and piles of good things were nestling under marquees ready for the enjoyment of scholars after their walk on Friday morning.”

For many children who took part in either the main town Walking Day or one of the district walks, the real excitement was taking their Walking Day pennies to spend at the fair.

With the arrival of motor vehicles in the early 20th century it was possible to travel further afield with some Warrington families visiting the fair at Southport in the afternoon.
