Nothing really demonstrates the violence of WW1 than physical evidence; in this case a protective steel helmet with a shrapnel hole through the centre of it. This particular helmet was worn by Private Howett on the 1st July 1916 when he sustained a head injury but survived. Many were less lucky on this first day of the Somme Offensive which saw the greatest loss of live in one day in British military history - just under 20,000 died. This object will form part of a special display commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Somme which will open on 1st July 2026. See our website https:// fusiliermuseumwarwick.com for details of this and the supporting talks programme

An absolutely brilliant talk by Helen Frost last Saturday on the Land Army women who kept Britain fed in WW1. With a combination of great images and displays, thorough research and extraordinary passion, Helen recreated the world in which these women pioneers overcame prejudice to keep Britain from starvation as the destruction of supply ships by the German U boats took its toll. To learn more about forthcoming talks at the museum that bring history to life, go to https://fusiliermuseumwarwick.com and search the what’s in section.
