Bowes Railway

09/10/2026

Roll up, roll up! In honour of the Bicentenary of Mr George Stephenson's excellent invention, which enabled wagons to ascend the dizzying heights of the Bowes Incline, we have held a series of HISTORIC TALKS at Bowes Railway throughout the year.

Our last (but certainly not least!) talk will be given by the wonderful Peter Welsh:

🗓️ Tuesday 27th October 2026
⏰ 10:30am-12:30pm
📍 Bowes Railway Museum, Springwell Village, NE9 7QJ

It will be FREE of CHARGE, fascinating, and fuelled by tea, coffee and biscuits! What's not to love? No booking necessary, just pop along for 10:30am!

Archive Photo of the Week: SS John Bowes

Designed and built by Charles Palmer at his Jarrow shipyard, launched in 1852. The SS John Bowes was a revolutionary iron hulled, steam propelled collier which used water as ballast. Where the average journey by sailing collier was around a month, this was reduced to less than a week’s round trip, speeding up the export of the coal arriving at Jarrow Staithes from the Bowes Railway system.
