GBS Fine Art are pleased to announce a new exhibition of complementary work by two photographic artists, Emily Allchurch and , opening 26th November.

Entitled 'A Distant Mirror', it consists of Allchurch’s highly praised recent series 'The Six Seasons', her personal interpretation of Bruegel’s famous suite of paintings, and 'Xenia', the new series of elaborate still lives by Martin Prothero, his hommage to the Dutch genre paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries. This will be the first time Allchurch’s series will have been exhibited at full size in the same room — as were the original Bruegel paintings in Flemish merchant, Nicolaes Jonghelinck’s Antwerp townhouse — and takes place prior to an exhibition in the spring of next year at the National Trust’s Upton House in Warwickshire.

We will be hosting a couple of private lunches with the artists in the gallery; please DM for further information

Last chance to see Harry Cory Wright's solo show EAST at the gallery...
Some of the first pictures I developed in black and white were of the ; black and white photographs, grainy and rich, looking from the in Scotland west across the sea.

More than forty years later this new series comprises a set of photographs and reliefs taken from the other side of The Atlantic looking back towards Europe from the island of on the west coast of the USA.

Through my life I have taken many pictures of dawn through to sunrise. I am entranced by the shift of light from darkest blue/black to the shimmer of daylight through yellows, oranges and pinks, all this time with a deep sense of prospect of what is ahead.

I photograph inland too of course but given the choice I would gravitate to the coast every time. The wide expanse of space, air and water is countered nicely by the specific and singular location that you find yourself. Its always easy to find such places on the map.

In the last few years, making applied work in response to the photographic process I have been working on a series of relief panels using pastel on board. These are intended to stand alone, though of course they work in conjunction with the views of the sea from which they came.

The photographs explore the light, sense of space and volume over the sea whilst the reliefs are physical manifestations of the experience of looking deep into that space.

Welcome to the weekend Photo London with - among others - new works from Martin Prothero, Xenia I and Xenia II.

Xenia (ξενία) is an ancient Greek concept that translates to "hospitality," "guest-friendship," or "ritualized friendship". It signifies a reciprocal relationship between host and guest, rooted in generosity, gift-giving, and mutual respect. It was considered a fundamental value in ancient Greek society and a moral obligation, as well as a political imperative.

Continuing on from his Chiarascuro series, Prothero uses long exposures and literally paints his subject matter with the light source during the exposure.

Cathy de Monchaux’s 1984 Unicorn, 2025 has arrived.

First conceived in 1984 and long kept hidden in her London studio, this powerful, pony-sized form has been reimagined for today — reborn through cutting-edge photogrammetry, 3D printing, and bronze casting as an edition of 12.

We’re thrilled to unveil it for the first time at EXPO Chicago — and it’s already a showstopper.

Born in London in 1960, de Monchaux has built a celebrated international career: a Turner Prize nominee (1998, for her solo show at Whitechapel Gallery), Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors, and widely exhibited at major institutions including Tate, the Hayward Gallery, the Pompidou Centre, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Her work is held in leading public and private collections across the world.

1984 Unicorn, 2025 is a statement for now: bold, alive, unforgettable.

“Silence is so accurate.”
― Mark Rothko

Emma Tod's 'Ring', was inspired by a variety of disparate sources including images from the James Web telescope, Rothko’s Maroon series, and the idea that light is simultaneously a wave and a particle.

Three tondos from Gill Rocca's Figment series...

Gill Rocca's Figment Series began in 2010 and is ongoing. Painted in oil onto birch ply tondos, the works vary in size from the smallest at 20cm diameter to the largest at 80cm.

While the philosophical and aesthetic properties of a circle are well established, for Rocca the form accentuates the liminal space between her intentions and what subconsciously emerges during the process of painting. The tondos – and indeed all the paintings – are meticulously layered with thin coats of gesso and sanded back prior to the application of multiple layers of thin oil glazes that slowly and gradually build up the image.
