Creating large abstract expressionist paintings is a deeply personal process for me, one that involves layering, gestures, time, and energy to bring a canvas to life. When I work on a large scale, I immerse myself in the physicality of the process, using my entire body to engage with the canvas. Every sweeping gesture, every brushstroke or splatter, is a record of my movement and presence, a reflection of the energy I bring to the work.

I approach each painting with an openness to discovery, allowing layers to build up over time. This process of layering is not just about adding paint—it’s a way of embedding a sense of time and history into the work. I love how earlier marks can be concealed beneath new ones, only to reappear when I scrape away or alter the surface. This interplay between what is hidden and what is revealed gives the painting a depth that mirrors the complexity of human experience, like memories surfacing over time.

The gestures I use are central to my art; they create a direct connection between my physical presence and the canvas. The larger the canvas, the more I feel the need to move, to let my gestures become expansive and dynamic. It’s an experience of translating emotion and energy into a visual form, capturing moments of intensity and calm, tension and release.

For me, abstract expressionism is not just about the final image but about the act of creating itself—a way to explore, to confront emotions, and to express something that feels true in the moment. My work is built up, layer by layer, with each one holding the traces of time and energy I invest. It is this process of building up and breaking down that gives my paintings their sense of history, depth, and life.
