World of Stuff and Story Using reclaimed materials, WoS seeks to inspire early years educators to provide opportunities for children to engage in creative and critical thinking.

WoS is an action research project based in North Somerset which seeks to motivate and inspire early years educators to provide creative opportunities for children to engage in creative and critical thinking. The project uses reclaimed and intelligent materials as open-ended resources for children to play with and explore the 'big ideas' or concepts that shape their world. The project has been inspired by the Reggio Emila approach to early education and reflects the philosophy that children are strong, powerful, curious and competent learners. Settings that become members of the WoS become part of a learning community in which colleagues share ideas, understandings and views about children's thinking and learning. We create collections, or 'provocation pods' which are used by member schools and early years settings to nurture, observe and analyse the characteristics of effective learning in action. Each pod contains an irresistible mixture of reclaimed artefacts and natural materials through which children demonstrate their extraordinary capabilities.

Story Pod: I love you Blue
Feedback: Childminder JI

I read the story with some of my older children. They really enjoyed the story. They loved Blue the whale and gave him cuddles. They asked so many questions as we read the story. We pretended the plastic waste was in the whale’s tummy (by placing everything under the whale). They were sad when the whale did not feel well and helped to take the rubbish away. They pretended to recycle everything.
They pretended they were on the beach. They made sandcastles and had ice- creams and did a little pretend beach clean! One of my four-year-olds said, ‘Oh, I really love this story’.
We are now taking memberships for the next academic year. If you would like to become a member please email [email protected] or [email protected]

Grace and the Grumblies

Feedback Mendip Green.

This was a new story that we did not know. It opened up a lot of discussion- kindness, helping people, after we had all understood the story. It linked nicely to other discussions we had had e.g. comic relief, harvest. It led to interest in different foods that we have liked. It linked to food packaging and the environment. We talked about money and what it is- interesting discussion no value of money (reception and class 1), buying things and where we shop. Some childrenshowed photos on Tapestry about family trips to food bank to donate food.

Feedback from Bournville Preschool:

We read the book in small groups at snack time. It was hard hitting when you first read it, but we spoke about if you feel hungry and have those grumbly feelings in your tummy then to tell a grown up and we can get you some food. The children liked looking at all the different packages and were able to name them and said where they could buy them from, Tesco or Asda.

It is now time to think about renewing your memberships. We have so many resources on offer for you to borrow for as long as you wish. These really do enhance your best practice. Please email [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.

Pod 25.
Feedback: Highdale Nursery.

This Pod was introduced to the children in small groups, supported by an adult.
Most children were engrossed and chose to explore the objects , independently, for 20 minutes or more.
Many children were fascinated with the animals, either using them to support imaginative play or enjoying exploring textures, commenting on similarities and differences and using senses to experiment.

H ‘ I’m making a sound.’ H listens carefully for several minutes as he repeatedly dropped the glass beads into the glass bowl.
G loved the unicorn, not letting others have a turn. She made a horse sound and played imaginatively. I encourage G to take turns. She fussed the robin affectionately.
M revisited the Pod exploring the glass beads and buttons again. She filled and poured from the containers and arranged them. With support she took turns with a peer who really wanted the resources she is using.
A told the educator ‘I wish I had some of these precious objects at my house.’ A loved the china birds and enjoyed holding them, looking after them, using them for props and exploring textures.

Feedback: Folly Farm Day Nursery

We sat with the children and said, ‘Should we have a look at this?’ ‘Yes’, they replied in very excited voices. Six children sat and explored all the items. We counted the eggs. We spoke about the different birds in the cage. We had a conversation about sharing.

Annual memberships can be requested all year round. Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] for further information.

Story Pod Feedback: Locking Preschool, Locking Primary School.

At the bottom of the garden.

As there were some very delicate bits in this Pod, I decided to lay it out on a table and sat with the children as they explored the contents. I did not say anything to them as I wanted the children to take the lead. It was clear, quite quickly, that many children were unfamiliar with otters, as most children asked me what they were. This led to lovely discussions about where they lived and what they ate.

There were some wonderful comments as the children explored including:
‘I’ve found the tooth fairy.’
It’s made of stone.’ (Otter)
‘This is heavy.’ (Otter)
‘These are friends, they are going on holiday.’ (Two fairies)
‘The otter doesn’t like stone, but he can’t get off. He needs to go to the swimming pool.’ (Stone Otter)
‘There are two doors. The 3 little bears live here in the cottage.’ (Cottage)
‘He’s doing calm.’ (Small toad, the child then imitates meditating! My favourite comment!)

‘Once upon a time there was a fairy who was flying. She went to a house, ding, d**g. (pretended to ring the bell). Another child joined in with the role play. ‘Hello, come in!’ (Pretended to feed the fairies some food)

One child only played with the otters, lining them all up around the basket.
