Whitby Museum Whitby Museum is run by the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society.
(207)

The Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society was established in 1823 and has around 800 members. It is one of the very few remaining Literary & Philosophical Societies that still runs an independent Museum, the older parts of which are often regarded as a 'Museum within a Museum' and have the atmosphere of an Edwardian Museum. The extension, opened in 2005, offers a costume gallery, temporary exhibition room and a lecture (Normanby) room.

What will you find inspiring from our collection? Good luck to everyone entering! Thanks to National Literacy Trust for guiding the writing sessions and our wonderful volunteers for introducing the kids to special items in our collection. ❤📖📚

Happy Birthday Frank Meadow Sutcliffe! Born 6th October 1853 Frank's photographs captured local people and places. The images we know and love today were mostly taken in his free time with the majority of his work comprising classic portrait style images in his studio. From the 1920's until his death in 1941, Sutcliffe was secretary of Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society - which still runs Whitby Museum to this day and holds a large collection of Sutcliffe's work which can be viewed by appointment, a selection of prints of his work, cards and postcards are available in the museum shop, a selection of prints can also be ordered from our online museum shop. Whitby Museum, Tuesday-Sunday 10am-4:30pm. Pannett Park, Whitby, YO21 1RE.
