A hidden piece of history has been rediscovered in Durham – with a fascinating Wi******er College connection!
Volunteers clearing overgrown ivy near Durham's Elvet Bridge have uncovered a plaque dating back to 1883, commemorating the creation of a riverside walkway named after William Andrewes Fearon.
Fearon was a former pupil of Wi******er College who returned as an Assistant Master (1867–1882), before becoming Headmaster of Durham School. He later returned to Wi******er as Headmaster from 1884 to 1901.
His legacy lives on at Wi******er College today, with one of our boarding houses, Fearon's, named in his honour.
The newly rediscovered plaque celebrates Fearon's role in establishing the riverside path, which is still known as Fearon Walk more than 140 years later.
