Obituary of John Cadman, one of the most influential and pioneering figures in the history of English hockey ❤️

John was an England and Great Britain international player who was later appointed National Coach by the Hockey Association – the first in the world to be employed in a national director of coaching role.

John leaves behind an extraordinary legacy: as an international player of distinction; as a global pioneer in coach education; as an author whose work shaped learning for decades; and as a beloved mentor, colleague and friend. English hockey and the international game are profoundly different because of him.

We are saddened to share news of the death of John Cadman at the age of 91.

John was a distinguished England international player and a pioneering figure in the development of modern English coaching. He represented both England and Great Britain, earning 14 England caps and 13 GB caps, and competed as a centre forward at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. He played county and club hockey across Essex, Kent, Suffolk and beyond.

After introducing hockey as Master in Charge of PE at Friends’ School in 1960, he became the Hockey Association’s first National Coach in 1969, transforming English hockey by professionalising coaching structures and championing competitive leagues that elevated the sport from grassroots to elite level. Widely regarded as the “father of coach education” in the UK, Cadman shaped generations of players and coaches, and authored multiple influential books.

He will be remembered as kind man, generous with his time, as a formidable player of the amateur era and a visionary whose influence permanently changed the landscape of British hockey.

A fuller obituary will follow on The Hockey Museum website.

The Hockey Museum is saddened to report the death of Monica (Mon) Pickergill who died at her care home in Wakefield on Saturday 28 February.

Mon was elected as the fifteenth and final President of the All England Women’s Hockey Association (AEWHA) in 1992, with a mandate to deliver the centenary celebrations in 1995 and to steer the AEWHA towards a new joint association with the English men’s Hockey Association (HA). The merger of two such long-standing, independent Associations was never going to be easy, but Mon emerged as one of the most influential and significant figures involved in the process, successfully delivering the joint association in 1997. She then led the new English Hockey Association (EHA) as its first President for a full three-year term.

In December 2022, Mon was deservedly presented with the England Hockey (EH) Lifetime Achievement Award by the then President, Mike Stoddard (pictured).

A full obituary will be published in due course. Funeral details will be published when available.
