Born on 1 June 1926, Marilyn Monroe would have turned 100 today.

Monroe’s image remains one of the most recognisable in contemporary culture. Warhol’s fascination with her glamour, vulnerability and myth produced some of the most enduring images of the 20th century.

Warhol’s use of the silkscreen technique highlights how fame can become a commodity. By repeating Monroe’s portrait, he both reduces her to a mass‑produced image and elevates her to an almost mythic status. The work invites us to reflect on how society consumes and ultimately discards its icons.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was one of the most influential American artists to emerge in the post-war period. A leading figure in the Pop Art movement, he reimagined what art could be at a time of great social, political and technological change. Warhol’s fascination with fame, celebrity and commercial culture produced some of the most recognisable images in 20th century art.

This major ARTIST ROOMS exhibition, presented through our partnership with Tate and National Galleries of Scotland, celebrates one of the most influential figures in Pop Art. Bringing together iconic and rarely seen works from across Warhol’s career, Art Star includes drawings, screenprints, paintings and photographs, from Hollywood icons to everyday objects transformed into art.

🎟 Tickets are now available. Visitors aged 20 and under can attend free of charge.

Music is a central part of Shaquelle Whyte’s artistic process. Shattered Dreams takes its title from a track on Earl Sweatshirt’s 2018 album Some Rap Songs. Whyte likens composing a song to making a painting, both shaped by experimentation, revision and intuitive decision making.

‘Music keeps me sane in the studio,’ he explains, ‘song titles, genres or particular artists can spark ideas that resonate. They help me paint, especially when I’m tired or frustrated. And what I listen to inevitably finds its way into the work, whether that’s Earl Sweatshirt, Sampha or Boris Gardiner.’

The exhibition title also reflects Whyte’s experience of growing up in Wolverhampton and the wider Black Country, a region shaped by industrial decline. It speaks to the challenges faced by many living in a region where structural disadvantage has had lasting effects on communities.
