1944 - D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy. Two battalions of the Oxf & Bucks Light Infantry landed on D-Day, by air and by sea:
1st Bucks (TA) Battalion landed at Sword Beach, part of No. 6 Beach Group, responsible for organising units landing there, the battalion provided infantry support within their beach Group.
2nd Battalion arrived by air, with D and elements of B Company landing in the early hours of the morning to capture the Caen Canal and Orne River bridges - vital for forces arriving at the beaches to advance into France. The majority of 2nd Bn landed in the evening, reinforcing their allies and fighting to hold the bridgehead.
Of course, D-Day was just the beginning, and 1st Battalion Oxf & Bucks would also serve in Normandy. Arriving by sea in late June, they would be involved in fighting all the way through France, into Belgium, Holland and on to Germany.
📷️ : Look closely at the aerial photo and you can ake out little white crosses scatted across the fields - these are Horsa gliders - with a tight group of three very close to the bridge in the top left!
📷️ : The second photo, from the Imperial War Museum, shows men of 6th Beach Group, including 1st Bucks Bn, looking out to sea from their beach sector.
