🎉 VOLUNTEER WEEK: DAY 2 (Part 1) 🎉

Today, we are shining the spotlight on one of our creative Paint Your Own Pottery volunteers! 🎨🖌️

Our pottery painting sessions bring so much joy to visitors of all ages, and it’s all thanks to the passion of the volunteers guiding them. Here is Kathy Boalch, sharing her story of volunteering in the studio:

"I started volunteering for M.O.R.W last summer, it came about quite by chance when I attended an Elgar Festival event held at the Worcester Porcelain Museum and I happened to learn that M.O.R.W were looking for volunteers. After a meeting with one of their lovely staff and a tour of the premises I was taken on.

I chose to work in their Pottery Studio which I absolutely love; my main duties are attending the public who book a session in the studio where they can paint a piece of pottery which is later glazed and fired in the kiln and the finished pieces are then collected a couple of weeks later. The whole process is a feast of creativity.

Being a member of the team at the M.O.R.W is fun and every day working there is a very rewarding experience."

🎉 WELCOME TO VOLUNTEER WEEK!: DAY 1 🎉

This week, we are throwing a giant digital celebration for the amazing people who volunteer at the Museum of Royal Worcester. We are also sharing a new volunteer story every single day so you can meet the passionate people behind the scenes.🌟

We’re kick-starting the celebrations with the story of Cathy, one of our fantastic collection volunteers!

"I’m a librarian by trade. When I first started volunteering at the Museum (nearly ten years ago!) I catalogued the library, and I still keep it up to date. I have also catalogued some original design drawings, transcribed audio tapes of former workers’ memories, written pages for the website, and I was one of the team that cleaned and packed collection items for storage when the Museum closed for renovation. These days I mostly handle enquiries from members of the public, researching and writing replies to their questions about Royal Worcester items. The variety of work is a wonderful way to learn about the history of Royal Worcester and its products, as well as the numerous companies that have made up the Royal Worcester family.

I am also on the Arts Society conservation team, carrying out simple repairs and protective measures for archival materials. I enjoy both aspects of volunteering enormously, and I hope I can continue to do so for many more years.

Cathy"

Happy International Tea Day! 🌍🫖

Did you know why Worcester teapots were considered the best British teapots in the mid-18th century?

The secret was in the recipe. Worcester added soapstone to its porcelain body, giving its teapots exceptional resistance to thermal shock. While many British porcelains cracked when boiling water was poured in, Worcester pots could withstand the heat—making them both beautiful and practical for daily tea drinking.

A true innovation for Britain’s growing tea culture. ✨

This beautiful example of a Worcester teapot still has its matching stand, which was used to protect wooden surfaces from heat damage. Chantilly Teapot and Stand, 1780, MoRW 327.
