The Unlocking the Severn project (completed in 2022) has built 4 fish passes on the River Severn and modified 2 weirs on the River Teme to improve river connectivity for fish. The project has unlocked 158 miles of river habitat for rare and endangered migratory fish, including the endangered twaite shad. Diglis Fish Pass was the largest of these structures when built: 100m long, 8m wide, 5m deep. More than 27 species of fish have been recorded using Diglis Fish Pass since its completion in 2021. Diglis Island is a manmade lock island in the River Severn near Worcester city centre. As part of Unlocking the Severn, the island and its Victorian workshop were renovated and turned into a beautiful space to host visitors and school groups on special open days.
