🌿 Unearthing Herbal Histories with Digital Archives
✨ A Being Human Festival event

Join us for an evening where ancient plant stories meet hands-on herbal crafting.
From 6–9pm at 52a Stonegate, we’ll dive into York’s Viking Age botanical past, exploring the real archaeological plant remains that reveal women’s everyday lives, skills, and healing traditions.

Using evidence from the Archaeology Data Service, we’ll uncover the hidden herbal knowledge preserved in York’s soil — then use it to create your own winter wellness remedies, inspired by the very plants our ancestors relied on.

Hosted by The Historical Herbalists, The Girls’ Club (York), and the Archaeology Data Service, this event blends archaeology, storytelling, women’s history, community craft, and seasonal herbal practice.

✨ Come connect past and present through the plants that shaped them both.

🍁 Unearthing Herbal Histories with Digital Archives 🍁

Throughout history, women have been the caregivers and healers of their communities — custodians of wellbeing and connection. Yet, many of their names and contributions have been lost to time. This immersive herbal crafting workshop invites you to rediscover their stories through the lens of digital archives, exploring how archaeological records of plant remains from York, preserved by the Archaeology Data Service and Heritage Science Data Service, reveal the deep relationship between women, healing, and the natural world.

✨ Free Workshop — tickets available via CLIQ or the link in our bio.

After a summer of wonderful events, we're finally enjoying a much needed break at the family croft on Skye 🌊☀️

Aaand the herbs are never far away! Wild thyme and Selfheal tea, a balm for mind, body and spirit 💖

The island is full of medicine, clinging to the grey rocks, peeking from the meadow grass, sheltering beneath the trees and threading their way along the beaches and coastlines...

I'm sitting beneath the endless blue sky, while buzzards scream overhead, bees buzz in the lavender bush and the sun-warmed stones are smooth beneath my bare feet... bliss!

Fabulous weekend in Heysham at the Viking Festival, the læknir's apothecary was buzzingall weekend! Thank you to all our wonderful visitors who came to listen to tales of Norse healing medicine, sample tonic heather vinegar, explore the plants and purchased our Balm Kits (sold out! 🙏💚)

We even ended up making a herbal infused for a recovering broken wrist with comfrey, plantain and Meadowsweet for one of our fellow reenactors (the Original Dave, iykyk! 🤣), which of course I never took pictures of as I was bottling it in front of visitors on Sunday! 🙈

We were blessed by an accord between Sunna and Thor who provided warm sunny evenings to relax with friends old and new round the fire after hours, before cooling us all off on the Sunday with immense cloudbursts! 😆

An especially huge thank you to all the incredible staff and volunteers who make this such an epic weekend for all the reenactorsand traders! We can't wait to be back next year! 💖

Small but perfectly formed community planning day for the Everholm Project in a rather rainsoaked Annan yesterday!

Thanks to everyone who visited to share their thoughts and help shape the landscaping of Everholm park. We drank nettle and wild rose tea, crafted, and talked about suitable edible and medicinal plants trees, and hatched exciting plans for interactive play areas, cosy corners among roses, and the overhaul of the pavilion giving the park much needed comfort facilities and social spaces...

Plenty of great ideas on the table by the end of the afternoon, with a clearer vision of how the renovation could look, with the amazing Spirit of the Annan sculpture at its centre.

Onwards and upwards!
