Trade Beads: Symbols of Exchange and Identity

Long before the arrival of Europeans on the West African coast in the late 15th century, beads already held great cultural, spiritual, and economic importance across the region.

Archaeological discoveries from the Late Stone Age and Iron Age have revealed beads made from materials such as bones, ostrich shells, and metals, showing how deeply embedded bead-making and trade were in African societies. By the first millennium A.D., a thriving stone bead trade had developed across the western Sudan.

Glass beads later entered West Africa through the trans-Saharan trade routes long before the 15th century, connecting the region with North Africa and beyond. Historical accounts by Arab travelers between the 12th and 14th centuries A.D. highlight the immense value of beads in trade, status, and adornment.

Beads were crafted from a variety of materials including stone, bone, wood, coconut shell, seashells, clay, brass, horn, and glass, each carrying its own meaning and significance.

You can explore a collection of these historic trade beads and more at the National Museum of Ghana.

Great exhibition at National Museum of Ghana - GOLDWEIGHTS

Between the 15th and 19th centuries, communities in Ghana created brass weights used for measuring gold dust, which served as a major form of currency in trade. These weights came in many forms geometric patterns, human figures, animals, plants, and everyday objects. Some designs even carried symbolic meanings and represented proverbial sayings.

The goldweights were made using the cire perdue (lost-wax) method. A wax model was shaped and covered in clay, then melted out, leaving a mold into which molten brass was poured. If a weight was too heavy, it was filed down; if too light, it was corrected with lead.

Today, these goldweights are admired not only as practical tools of trade but also as miniature works of art that reflect creativity and wisdom.

Explore these collections and more at the National Museum of Ghana, open daily from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.
