ARTIST • MOUSS BLACK/ DAOUDA TRAORE • THREADS OD ESSENCE • ONLINE • UNTIL 2 MARCH •

Threads of Essence is an invitation to reflect on the invisible ties that bind us in a world undergoing profound transformation. At a time when human rights are weakened by major military and economic powers, this exhibition explores the strength and fragility of human bonds international, fraternal, familial, and communal as essential forces of resilience.

In the face of current upheavals, these connections become threads of hope. They are not mere social constructs but vital strands that sustain identity, belonging, and aspiration. As societies fragment and uncertainty takes hold, these threads stretch, loosen, reconfigure, and most often break.

Daouda Traoré examines fraternity as a stabilizing force a foundation for resisting the shocks of global change. His work celebrates the power of bonds, community, and shared responsibility.
Mouss Black explores the terrain of uncertainty, stress, doubt, and existential anxiety that accompany a future in retreat. Yet at the heart of this tension lies a fierce will to be, to exist, to assert oneself despite erasure.

ARTIST • DELA QUARSHIE • THE BODY’S SILENT REBELLION • GALERIE HÜBNER+HÜBNER • GERMANY • UNTIL 27 FEB •

The Body’s Silent Rebellion, Dela Quarshie turns the pictorial surface into a resonant space for questions of body, identity and social ascriptions. Bodies appear as hybrid figures that oscillate between the human and tentacular, octopus-like forms - a visual metaphor for identity as something fluid, adaptable and constantly in motion. The tentacle-like extensions that stretch across the canvas in organic lines signal not only the potential for metamorphosis, but also a probing of boundaries and categories.

Rich colors, mosaic-like surface structures and figurative transformations make visible how identity does not exist as a static construct, but emerges from individual experience and social influence - a quiet yet insistent resistance against normative expectations of gender, embodiment or belonging. Quarshie’s works read as a visual reflection on what remains of us as we change, and how profoundly external attributions shape our sense of self.

Since 2019, we have been showcasing contemporary art beyond borders: international art fairs to propel our artists onto the global stage, bold collaborations with galleries and institutions, and art prizes that bring emerging artists’ projects to life.

From Onion Street to Mulberry Street, we have created spaces for artistic expression for artists and art enthusiasts, with the mission of revealing the talent of the African continent and contributing to writing our history through the power of Art.

We are embarking on a transformation to offer immersive, inclusive art experiences close to you, opening the doors to an even richer, more open, and connected universe.

While we prepare to open our new space, we continue our projects and collaborations with partner galleries around the world and remain committed to supporting our artists. As for our exhibitions, they now unfold online via our platforms.

A new chapter is being written join us on this journey.

Our vision and impact on the art world continue.

Follow us on social media and be part of this new adventure.

This year, we are proud to support two Ghanaian artists whose paths we have followed closely: Enoch Nii Amon Hammond and Dela Quarshie. Two singular trajectories. Two distinct artistic languages. Two voices that matter.

We first discovered Enoch through the CFAO Prize, which we co-organised a few years ago. I want to extend special thanks to a remarkable photographer and an invaluable part of that project.

Since then, we have followed and supported Enoch with patience and passion. We’ve watched his gesture refine, his technique evolve into something uniquely his own, and his vision become bolder and more defined.

In March 2024, we had the immense pride of presenting his first solo exhibition in our space in Ghana. Today, we are thrilled to present his work to an international audience in Basel, Switzerland.

As for Dela Quarshie, he has been building his own visual language for several years. We’ve seen him experiment, question, search and ultimately, find a voice that is entirely his. His gaze, his forms, his relationship to the world. Like Enoch, he was a finalist of the API Prize – Africa Prime Initiative, led by philanthropist and patron Dr. Yaya Moussa.

Words fail to express the deep pain we felt upon learning of the passing of Koyo Kouoh. Her departure leaves an immense void. The impact of this woman on the art world, across the African continent and far beyond, was nothing short of extraordinary.

Koyo Kouoh was not just a figure of contemporary art she was a force. She awakened and inspired so many to embrace culture, to understand its importance, and to defend it with passion. She knew how to make art shine with rare conviction.

Her charisma, her eloquence, and her sometimes disarming frankness made her a pillar an essential voice in a field where bold voices are still far too rare. What a loss for Africa, for the world, for art and culture.
Why must such a bright light, such a brilliant mind, leave us so soon? She still had so much to say, so much to share, so much to accomplish. This loss is like a tidal wave violent, brutal, and unjust.

Koyo Kouoh, may the earth rest lightly upon you. Your legacy is eternal.
