Chrysanthi Koumianaki’s ‘Wave I’ transforms drawing into a form of weaving. Through delicate, overlapping blue lines, the artist creates a rhythmic composition inspired by the industrial fabrics used to cover buildings under construction. The intersecting lines evoke both the structure of woven textiles and the fluid movement of water, blurring the boundaries between geometry and organic form. The work reflects the artist’s ongoing exploration of urban transformation, temporality and the relationship between material, surface and space.

Presented at CAN Gallery in 2025, ‘Hide or Disguise’ is a large-scale, modular installation inspired by the industrial fabrics that conceal buildings under construction or renovation. Developed in collaboration with the artisans of the Benaki Museum’s NEMA Passementerie, the work transforms utilitarian construction materials into an intricate, handcrafted textile. Extending nearly 100 metres, its flexible structure allows for multiple configurations, continuously reshaping its relationship with the surrounding architecture. Through this interplay of concealment and revelation, Koumianaki explores urban transformation, temporality and the potential for renewal, while drawing attention to traditional craftsmanship and the relationship between labour, material and contemporary artistic production.

Industrial construction netting draped over an Athenian building. Like temporary urban veil, concealing structures in transition, this was the starting point for Koumianaki’s exploration of camouflage and transformation.
