700 (510-500 π.Χ.)

Following conservation and restoration interventions, the statue of the Rider Acr. 700 (510-500 BC) has been re-displayed in the Acropolis Museum Archaic Gallery. The sculpture was mounted on its original inscribed ancient pedestal, which was formerly stored on the Acropolis rock. On the occasion of European Conservation Day 2026, the sculpture is presented to Museum visitors in its newly restored form.

For years, the sculpture had been displayed on a base constructed between 1956 and 1964, as part of re-exhibition works at the old Acropolis Museum by Yiannis Miliadis, who was at the time Curator of Antiquities of the Acropolis.

During recent conservation works, the former plexiglass supports were removed, and the sculpture was cleaned and remounted onto its ancient pedestal, thereby revealing its original form.

Head of a statue of an hoplite | 475-470 BC

Head of a statue almost life-size. It was found in 1886 northeast of the Propylaia.

It depicts a bearded hoplite with individual facial characteristics. The upper part and the back side of the head were smoothened so that a separately cast helmet, now lost, would be attached in the drilled holes. The hair form short locks on the forehead, the beard is rendered in wavy incisions and the eyebrows are made in relief. The eyes were made of glass whereas the irises were of some other inlaid material, which is not preserved.

The statue is a work of the so-called "Severe Style", a period during which the artists begin to prefer bronze for the production of large scale statues.

Did you know that there is a life-size dog sculpture displayed in the Museum’s Archaic Acropolis Gallery? 🐕🏛️

This statue was unearthed nearly intact during excavations north of the Parthenon and it dates back to 520 BC. It represents a hunting dog with a long snout and intense gaze.

Τhe marble dog gives the impression that it is caught in a moment of great intensity, as if it is poised for attack, as it seems to have caught sight of its prey. You can tell this by its bent legs, the tension in its muscles and nerves, as well as its ribs and sucked-in belly. His ears were made from a separate piece of marble and inserted in square openings on the head.

The sculpture probably formed part of the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia on the west of the Parthenon, which makes sense as Artemis was the goddess of the hunt. Ancient Greeks valued hunting dogs greatly, with the hounds of Laconia and Crete especially prized for their strength, intelligence and speed.

✨ Lamassu of Nineveh | Michael Rakowitz & Ancient Cultures ✨

The 2nd part of the trilogy Michael Rakowitz & Ancient Cultures continues until 31 October, a collaboration between the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the Acropolis Museum and NEON.

The monumental installation – situated in the surroundings of the Acropolis Museum – brings the sculpture into immediate dialogue with the archaeological excavation visible beneath the Museum, the sacred landscape of the Acropolis above and the contemporary architectural space of the Museum itself.

Rakowitz uses empty cans of Iraqi date syrup for his Lamassu installation. These cans represent the once-renowned Iraqi industry that was decimated, as well as the human, economic, and ecological devastation wrought by the Iraq wars and their aftermath. Through objects, Rakowitz refers to the people who live alongside them and to their stories.

Hermes, Athena, Herakles and a flute player from a tripod | Around 500 BC

Part of a tripod used for supporting a bronze vessel that was dedicated on the Acropolis. It was found in the 19th century during the excavations conducted at the Acropolis and it was made in a workshop of ancient Etruria, a region in the west part of Italy.

The winged shoes of the figure on the left permit its identification with Hermes. Next to him stands Athena, dressed in chiton, himation and aegis, who is holding by the wrist her protégé, Herakles. Herakles is clad in a long chiton, himation and a lion-skin. The head of the dead animal can be seen over the hero’s left thigh, the hind legs and the tail over the right thigh, while the front paws are knotted over Herakles chest in a knot (Herakles knot). Next to him a flute-player with a double flute in his hand seems to guide the group towards the left. The group’s composition points to the myth of the deification of Herakles, his arrival that is at Mt Olympus which signifies his postmortem deification.
