Gennadius Library Opened in 1926 with 26,000 volumes from diplomat and bibliophile, Joannes Gennadius, the Gennadius Library now holds a richly diverse collection in Athens.

Joannes Gennadius (1844-1932) offered his personal library to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens to house and maintain in 1922. The conditions of the deed of gift were that the collection would be housed separately, that it would remain in Greece, and that the Library would be available to the scholars of all nations. The Gennadius Library now holds a richly diverse collection of over 145,000 books and rare bindings, archives, manuscripts, and works of art illuminating the Hellenic tradition and neighboring cultures. Located in an architecturally significant building across the street from the main American School campus, the Library has become an internationally renowned center for the study of Greek history, literature, and art, from ancient to modern times. In addition to its role as a library and research institution, “the Gennadeion” is also an active participant in the Athenian and international community through its public lectures, seminars, concerts, exhibitions, and publications.

About the lecture:

Athens not only pioneered many forms of high culture ––– artistry, tragedy, philosophy etc. etc. –– but within these novel genres it produced works that have never been surpassed. Yet, Athens was also a pioneer in financial and economic genres, inventing the private bank (trapeza), maritime courts (dikai emporikai), and sophisticated forms of credit (think intermediation and letters of credit!). It should be no surprise that in economic innovation, as in its cultural creations, the Athenians were not only originators but also practitioners at levels never surpassed, dominating the commercial life of the Eastern Mediterranean with skill and capability –– for example, playing a major role in development of the world’s first system of international law, a sea code whose essential principles continue to the present day.

My presentation will focus on how the Athenians developed systems that reified the huge potential profitability, and avoided the ruinous potential losses inherent in Mediterranean maritime commerce. Creditors did not receive mere interest on monies loaned: they effectively shared in the profits of the enterprise. In turn, the sea risk was allocated to the lender, and the borrower enjoyed special protection.

In Aristotle's words, a “monied mode of acquisition” had arisen by the fourth century from the new dominance of economic activity by persons pursuing financial gain (“making money from one another”), who converted every aspect of life into monetary considerations. This individualistic pursuit of profit (kerdos) reflected society’s new functioning through the exchange of goods and services for money, a process superseding the prior system of household production/consumption supplemented by barter based on social and political relations. Ancient evidence shows that Athens was an “extraordinarily profitable” (kerdaleôtatê) place in which to conduct commerce: because of the universal acceptance of Athenian silver coinage, for example, a trader delivering goods to Peiraeus could always, if he wished, sell elsewhere for more than his original cost the Athenian coins he received in payment.
It is this newly monetized and credit-enriched economy that is the subject of my presentation.

In the Footsteps of the Odyssey

From Florence and Venice to Strasbourg, Amsterdam and London, we have selected a glimpse of the Gennadius Library’s remarkable Homeric collection, focusing especially on the many lives of the Odyssey.

Joannes Gennadius assembled some 700 Homeric editions, tracing the extraordinary journey of Homer’s epics across languages, places, and centuries. Rare early editions, translations, and paraphrases reveal how the Homeric text was continually read, transformed, and reimagined, while artists such as John Flaxman and Baron H. de Triqueti gave Homer’s world new visual form.

This carousel offers only a small selection. Discover more treasures and explore the Homeric universe through the collecting vision of Joannes Gennadius in our online exhibition Homer at the Gennadius:

“The Place Where I Am From”: Celebrating Student Creativity at the Gennadius Library!

On September 26, we celebrated the imagination, creativity, and talent of students from across Greece at the awards ceremony of “The Place Where I Am From,” marking the 100th anniversary of the Gennadius Library.

Through creative writing, video, drama, and visual arts, students explored the meaning of place, connecting history and collective memory with personal experiences.

Congratulations to the eleven award-winning projects and to all the students, teachers, and families who made this creative journey possible!

A wonderful way for the Gennadius Library to begin its second century: welcoming a new generation to discover the past and reinterpret it through their own eyes.

The Thalia Potamianos Lecture Series concluded on October 6 at the Gennadius Library with a compelling lecture by 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐄. 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠, “𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬: 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐉𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲.”

Following opening remarks by Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis, Fleming explored the enduring relationship between Hellenism and Judaism, drawing on Primo Levi’s postwar journey with a Greek Jewish companion he called “Supergreek.” Her lecture illuminated the profound, often overlooked contributions of Greek Jews to the cultural life of the Mediterranean.
