Mati Santorini An art observatory in Santorini, Greece that investigates the human condition through the prisms of regional identitiy and contemporary art.

Mati Art Gallery in Fira is the main venue where visual artist Yorgos Kypris displays his work. It was established in 1990 in Santorini, an island in constant motion, shaped and changed by the forces of nature and social interactions. Within the framework of a society which is influenced by universal and local dynamics, Mati Art Gallery is committed to following the developments, while it remains faithful to its values, as an exponent of fine taste and contemporary perceptions about art.

We really love this piece! Lighting plays perfectly with negative space to extend the shapes of this dynamic sculpture on the surfaces around it (swipe to see the shadows it casts on the wall!). The vibrant blue-green patina on the inside peeks through the contrasting dark bronze of the outside, emphasizing its depth and form.

As part of RESONANCE — MATI’s 2026 cultural program —, and together with Impact Hub Athens , we invite Theodora Androni (The • Botanical Project ) to bring her practice to Santorini as part of the Hearth Summit Aegean 2026.

From Landscape to Colour

Through sustainable practices rooted in traditional methods, we will explore some of the earliest ways humans created colour — using plants, rocks and minerals to bring life to textiles and works of art.

Following the biodiversity walk, we will return to MATI Mesaria, where the plants and rocks collected along the way will become our creative materials. Through two natural colour practices, we will translate Santorini’s botanical and geophysical landscape onto textile and paper.

Από το Τοπίο στο Χρώμα

Μέσα από βιώσιμες πρακτικές που βασίζονται σε παραδοσιακές μεθόδους, θα εξερευνήσουμε μερικούς από τους αρχαιότερους τρόπους με τους οποίους ο άνθρωπος δημιουργούσε χρώμα — χρησιμοποιώντας φυτά, πετρώματα και ορυκτά για να δώσει ζωή σε υφάσματα και έργα τέχνης.

Μετά τον περίπατο βιοποικιλότητας, θα επιστρέψουμε στο MATI Μεσαριά, όπου τα φυτά και τα πετρώματα που θα έχουμε συλλέξει θα μετατραπούν στα δημιουργικά μας υλικά. Μέσα από δύο πρακτικές φυσικού χρώματος, θα μεταφέρουμε το βοτανικό και γεωλογικό τοπίο της Σαντορίνης σε ύφασμα και χαρτί.

Διοργανώνουμε μια συνάντηση για να μιλήσουμε για το πως αναγνωρίζουμε, πως επικοινωνούμε και πως αντιμετωπίζουμε περιστατικά έμφυλης βίας, παρενόχλησης και διακρίσεων στην καθημερινότητα και την εργασία σε μικρές κοινότητες.

Θα διαμορφώσουμε ένα ασφαλή και προστατευμένο χώρο συζήτησης για περίπου 15-20 άτομα, όπου γυναίκες, θηλυκότητες και ΛΟΑΤΚΙ+ άτομα θα μπορούν να θέσουν ερωτήματα, να μοιραστούν προβληματισμούς και να εξερευνήσουν πρακτικά βήματα υποστήριξης, αναζήτησης βοήθειας και αναφοράς περιστατικών.

(Ελληνικά στην επόμενη φωτογραφία) Since the 1990s, MATI has been a cultural landmark in Santorini and a pioneer of contemporary art on the island, connecting artists, ideas and visitors from around the world.

Today, through MATI Mesaria and the RESONANCE cultural programme, this dialogue expands beyond artistic expression, exploring the connections between art, place, community, culture and heritage. It is within this context that MATI joins the creation of Hearth Summit Aegean 2026 — a place-based gathering exploring how regeneration and wellbeing can be practiced in real places, here and now.

Hosted by Impact Hub Athens in collaboration with the The Wellbeing Project , the Summit brings together people, ideas and practices in Santorini to explore how places and communities can thrive through ecological, social and economic regeneration.

The Summit approaches Santorini not simply as a destination, but as a living system — shaped by its volcanic land, water, culture, communities and the pressures of contemporary life. It creates space to listen to local knowledge, exchange ideas and explore new forms of collaboration towards more sustainable and inclusive island futures.

For MATI, this gathering continues a long-standing belief in art as a space for connection, dialogue and exchange while opening that dialogue further into the landscape and the communities that shape the island.

Selected participants from across the Aegean will have the opportunity to join the Summit with a free ticket, bringing their voices, experiences and local knowledge into the heart of the conversation.

[Ελληνικα παρακατω] Everything started with a simple email from a French guy who wanted to come to Greece, drink tsipouro and w**e, and create his art. Hahaha. Yes, we’re talking about William XO

Little did we know that this email would turn into one of the most creative collaborations of the season! What started as something small slowly grew into a bigger concept, one that embraces exploration, curiosity, and, above all, the love of expression, no matter the medium.

Here are some highlights from the celebration, brought to life by Mati Santorini , William XO, Boozery Bar , and, of course, all of you who came to enjoy the music, the paintings, the drinks, and the beauty of MATI Mesaria.

Here’s to curiosity, collaboration, and all the beautiful things that happen when we simply decide to create. Enjoy life. Express yourself. Drink tsipouro. ❤️

Όλα ξεκίνησαν με ένα απλό email από έναν Γάλλο που ήθελε να έρθει στην Ελλάδα, να πιει τσίπουρο και κρασί και να δημιουργήσει την τέχνη του. Ναι, μιλάμε για τον William XO!

Δεν φανταζόμασταν ότι αυτό το email θα εξελισσόταν σε μία από τις πιο δημιουργικές συνεργασίες της σεζόν! Κατι που ξεκίνησε ως κάτι απλό, σταδιακά μετατράπηκε σε ένα μεγαλύτερο εγχείρημα, ένα εγχείρημα που αγκαλιάζει την εξερεύνηση, την περιέργεια και, πάνω απ' όλα, την αγάπη για την έκφραση, ανεξάρτητα από το μέσο.

Ορίστε μερικές από τις καλύτερες στιγμές της γιορτής, που ζωντάνεψαν χάρη στη συνεργασια των MATI Santorini, William XO, Boozery Bar, και, φυσικά, σε όλους εσας που ήρθατε να απολαύσετε τη μουσική, τους πίνακες, τα ποτά και την ομορφιά του MATI Mesaria.

Και μέσα σε μια στιγμή… έγινε!

Μια βραδιά που όλοι εμείς στο MATI περιμέναμε με ανυπομονησία εδώ και μήνες, σχεδιάζοντας, δημιουργώντας, εκφράζοντας. Μα δεν ήταν απλώς μια εκδήλωση. Ήταν κάτι πολύ περισσότερο.

Στο πλαίσιο του Πολιτιστικού μας Προγράμματος για το 2026, RESONANCE, ο William XO ήταν η πρώτη μας καλλιτεχνική φιλοξενία. Και ήταν μεγάλη μας χαρά να μοιραστούμε μαζί σας το Oneiros, ένα project που συνδυάζει διαφορετικά μέσα και διαγράφει τα όρια ανάμεσα στη μουσική και τις εικαστικές τέχνες.

Φέρνοντας κοντά ανθρώπους κάθε ηλικίας και διαφορετικών καταβολών, με χαμόγελα, αστείες χορευτικές κινήσεις, ανοιχτές καρδιές και πολλή, πολλή αγάπη, γιορτάσαμε αυτό στο οποίο πιστεύουμε περισσότερο: την ΤΕΧΝΗ.

Συνδεθήκαμε. Μοιραστήκαμε. Εμπνευστήκαμε.

Σε ευχαριστούμε, WILLIAM XO , που μοιράστηκες μαζί μας αυτές τις υπέροχες εβδομάδες και που συνεργαστήκαμε για να δώσουμε ζωή σε κάτι τόσο όμορφο.

Boozery Bar — η ολοκλήρωση αυτού του project σε αυτή την ξεχωριστή βραδιά δεν θα μπορούσε να είχε πραγματοποιηθεί χωρίς εσάς. Σας ευχαριστούμε που το πιστέψατε και που γίνατε μέρος του. Ας είναι αυτή η αρχή για πολλά ακόμη που θα ακολουθήσουν.

Cruise ships bring about 1.5 million visitors per season to Santorini. These short-term visitors stop by our island during their holidays, enjoying the most central locations for merely a few hours. The cruise ships contribute to the contrasting nature of this beautiful place: some parts can bustle with crowds while others are entirely serene and empty. From MATI Fira, on the caldera over the old port, we see the cruise ships come and go and welcome many of you in our gallery! This is just one way that a boat can connect people and cultures from accross the world. A symbol for exchange and rebirth, the boats are dominant both in Yorgos Kypris' practice and in our daily life in Santorini.
