Embracing multidisciplinary practice and fostering cross collaborations with communities, rooted in our environment and context, we keep going to shape this space into a melting pot for arts, creativity and its many mediums. Together, we can fill this space with “lights” that sustain and enliven the dynamics of the creative ecosystem within it.

Fresh perspectives and thoughtful feedbacks help us keep moving forward. Your input means a lot to us.

Back in 2017, CCG and LagiLagi invited Kawamura Koheysai (), a contemporary shadow puppet performer artist and musician who received a scholarship from the Japanese government in 2016 after winning the Gotoh Memorial Foundation award in Japan. He chose Indonesia as a place to study culture and art, and shared his experiences in performing and puppet-making.

In this artwork, Kohe explores the imagination of storytelling through a scene from Nishioka Monkey and Yamada the Frog’s journey. They sail in search of a new island, but a storm arrives and damages their ship. Nishioka and Yamada fall into the sea, and then someone comes to help them.

“Monyet Nishioka Mencari Pulau Baru” (Nishioka Monkey Finds a New Island) is part of three heartwarming stories celebrating creativity, curiosity, and myths in the PlayPlay Charity Performance, held in February 2018 at CCG. The other two were “The White World of Siwa & Malini” by Papermoon Puppet Theater, and “Sang Kala” by Monez & Ninus.

Through the process of workshop with Kohey, children were encouraged to stay curious, caring, and empathetic, combining their imagination with personal family stories. They were invited to bring their parents and grandparents to take part, so they could explore and share stories about their ancestors together.

Another public program of Dealing in Distance at CCG last January, Nelden Djakababa Gericke, Ngurah Suryawan, and Minh Duc Pham, moderated by Gatari Surya Kusuma, opened a space for dialogue on how remembering through land, food, visual and living archive can become a way to reconnect beyond borders and history. Through “Tracing Identity Through Living Archives,” memories of personal experiences, land, plants, and food revealed layers of migration histories, colonial encounters, environmental transformations, and cultural resilience.

Each person carries a different method of caring for memory. They shared stories from their research and firsthand experiences on how local knowledge can be drawn from domestic practices and everyday matters that point towards universal questions and concerns about identity, sense of belonging, relationships, and distance. History is recorded in domestic practices of its time and preserved through the act of remembering and sustaining local knowledge today.

How do you deal with distance, and preserve the memories and histories that shape your identity today?

Looking forward to more chances to gather and share in the next cultural conversations!

Last week, as part of the mini festival Dealing in Distance by Goethe-Institut Indonesia, we gathered to explore natural pigments and textures through an eco print process led by Vita Wulansari. Ecoprint can be seen as a method of caring for memory, imprinting something natural and meaningful that comes directly from the environment around us.

Several local plants were used in the process, including water henna flower (bunga pacah air), moringa leaves (daun kelor), papaya leaves, marigold (bunga gemitir), and other local Balinese plants known for their beautiful forms and colors. These “memory imprints" can be taken home as visual fragments, preserving the colors and shapes of the leaves, flowers, and fruits used in the workshop.

Thank you to Goethe-Institut Indonesia and the Dealing in Distance team for making this possible!
