‘…𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥𝘴’, a solo exhibition by Sastra Wibawa. Exploring repetition, restraint, and the subtle tension between structure and disintegration, Wibawa’s latest paintings appear initially as measured grids and restrained forms. The short film and accompanying interview offer insights into Sastra Wibawa’s “languaging” process and the philosophical drivers of his latest works. Through his perspective, painting is presented as a “cultural vessel”; a medium that assembles random fragments of human experience into a structured, visual poetry (Syair Rupa).

The film explores the tension between the “prosaic” and the “poetic,” documenting how Wibawa translates the silhouettes of ritual ornaments from his family environment into a permanent, modular grid. Wibawa’s methodology emphasizes a rhythmic meter and a state of “being afloat,” where the act of creation is not a goal-oriented transformation but a commitment to a process where nature, knowledge, and mystery are inextricably interrelated.

In Siklus Mov. 2, composer Dewa Alit translates this concept of Siklus into a living sonic architecture. The composition moves away from literal representation, instead converting the mathematical precision of these cycles into a sequence of shifting sound colors and natural dynamics. By grounding the composition in the rigorous logic of the Balinese calendar, Dewa Alit avoids the traps of exoticization. Instead, he presents a sonic system that is as intellectually demanding as it is spiritually resonant.

In his most recent series, this interplay of closing and opening exists at an even more precarious threshold. Where color fields appear monochromatic, they are actually composed of contrasting hues placed in tight proximity. Where geometric forms or recurring visual shapes divide the space, their presence is filmy, like a membrane. The partitioning of the canvas does not feel strictly calculated by a ruler or angle. The effect is a color gradation that appears smooth from afar but is teeming with elements up close. There is an organic formation, an asymmetry that breathes life, even as the integrity of the canvas feels intentionally flat, almost “dead.” The “rhyme,” we might imagine, has dynamism but is muffled. Muffled with a control that verges on silence.

Sastra Wibawa’s paintings are ambiguous, standing at a threshold that speaks of an alternative path for painting. Through line and color, his works emerge as constellations of thought and ideas, structures that only come into existence through the artist’s process of thinking and making. In a time when perception and imagination are increasingly mediated by computational systems, Wibawa’s paintings are embodied counterpoint that remind us that artistic thought remains a lived, embodied act.

In Piwal V, Putu Septa navigates the complex tension between ancestral lineage and radical experimentation. The title itself—a Balinese word encompassing “rebellion,” “resistance,” and “deviation”, serves as a manifesto for Septa’s practice. The composition functions as an ecstatic sonic journey that intentionally subverts the established rules of gamelan.

Septa’s Piwal V represents a generational shift. The music evokes the atmospheric swells of minimalism and electronic abstraction, yet remains firmly grounded in the physical mechanics of the gamelan. It is a transportive interrogation of the medium, proving that the most potent acts of disobedience often come from those who understand the rules most intimately

In Gendang Ria, from the album Bunyi Bunyi Tumbal, Aditya Surya Taruna (performing under the moniker Hulubalang) reflects on the idea of _tumbal_ —an anonymous sacrifice shaped by the systemic violence of history. Through this composition, Taruna explores the weight of Tumbal; the non-belligerent “sacrifice” that is neither victim nor martyr, but a haunting reminder of the systemic forces that engender disillusionment. The composition unfolds as a fragmented sonic landscape where sound becomes a vessel for the unresolved echoes of collective memory.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who visited us at the gallery for ‘…𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥𝘴’, a solo exhibition by Sastra Wibawa. Exploring repetition, restraint, and the subtle tension between structure and disintegration, Wibawa’s latest paintings appear initially as measured grids and restrained forms. Yet, what begins as a disciplined monochrome unfolds into a complex, rhythmic study of change.

”[...] Paintings offer a layered view of the scene. One reality, a two and a three events at distances of different measures. Like a long stanza with consistent rhyming schemes. As sublime almost as endless ripples afloat a body of water, a reflection of light that continues to exist. Ever increasing as well as decreasing. A river that never is in the same state even though observed in silence.”

“They float. What are the kind of things floating in an image? A variety of gestures, different articulations, a human language. It is a singular way of coming to sense with what are beyond our knowing. We are happy with it, for as such we became aware that we exist, as part of a bigger state that we may never fully comprehend, but can feel [...] Paintings offer a layered view of the scene.
