Susan Hagen, Philadelphia has just completed a returning residency here at Ballinglen. Here are a few words she wrote about her experience. “I came to Ballinglen this time hoping to refocus on my studio practice after some big changes in my life. I let myself meander around in the studio, and work in a relaxed way without a fixed program. I worked with imagery of fish, bones, sheep and other animals, making watercolor and ink drawings and wood sculptures, and started a daily sketchbook practice. As always, the landscape was truly inspirational, especially the fields with sheep and cattle, the forests and bogs, and the rocky places along the shore. .hagen

A great day here at The Ballinglen Museum of Art, celebrating Infant Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, The Mayo Infant Mental Health Forum and the Early Years Sub Group of Mayo CYPSC are producing ‘Mayo Baby Week’.

This Infant Mental Health Awareness Week is focused on the theme of ‘Attunement’. Attunement refers to the sensitive process of tuning into our baby’s behaviour - facial expressions, sounds and body language, so that we understand their emotional state and respond to their needs. It is getting to know our baby. Huge thanks to for organising the day. To Lydia and Martin from A great fun day for us all, seeing our babies, toddlers and Mums having fun. All of us here at Ballinglen enjoyed it too.

Great photographs of the recent two day workshop held on the 7th June at The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, with Artist Joe Wilson. Thank you Joe for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

These one and two day workshops would not have been possible without funding from Creative Ireland, of which we are extremely grateful. . More workshops will follow later in the year.

The solo exhibition SONANCE at Taylor Galleries brings together a series of abstract works on Japanese paper, canvas and wood through which the artist explores states of transition. The sources of the paintings include references to ancient geological maps, the edges of seascapes, exposing the layers of the Anthropocene and human displacement. An engagement with realms of deep time informs the imagery, transforming the invisible and the imagined into a resonant visual language. McDonald’s paintings combine intense sequences of oil paint with natural materials such as iron-rich oxides, cinnabar, malachite and plaster, producing works charged with movement, sound, and rhythm.

You can watch a trailer here which offers a sense of the research behind this exhibition. Upcoming Book Launch:

A landmark publication celebrating the work of Siobhán McDonald will be launched later this summer. This richly illustrated volume edited by Helen Carey offers a significant exploration of the artist’s practice and research. Texts by writers including Steve Mentz, Maria Monotero Sierra and others. Further details and launch dates will be announced shortly: https://www.taylorgalleries.ie/contact/
